I honestly don't know a lot about it but I think it's a way of centralising all your communication methods (email, IM, etc) to just have one tool that does it all.
I think it's supposed to resemble an address book, with every kind of conversation relating to each contact in one place - so an email would be alongside an IM conversation and you can tie all your communication together.

Yep that's probably true that unless everyone is using google wave it doesn't work.......
