Toyota recalls 3.8m US vehicles

The recall includes the latest Toyota Camry model
Carmaker Toyota has announced its biggest recall, saying it will call in 3.8 million vehicles in the US.

The problem is with loose floormats, which may cause the accelerator pedal to stick.

The problem affects eight models of Toyota and Lexus cars and trucks in the US, where owners have been told to remove floormats on the driver's side.

The US government said it had received reports of 100 related incidents that involved 17 crashes and five deaths.

RECALLED MODELS
Camry sedan 2007-2010
Avalon sedan 2005-2010
Prius hybrid 2004-2009
Tacoma truck 2005-2010
Tundra truck 2007-2010
Lexus IS250 2006-2010
Lexus IS350 2006-2010
Lexus ES350 2007-2010
Last month, an off-duty California state trooper and three members of his family were killed when their 2009 Lexus E350 crashed in the San Diego area.

Before the crash, one of the passengers called 911 to report that the accelerator was stuck and the car had reached 120 miles per hour (193km per hour).

"Obviously the tragic accident in San Diego was certainly an eye opener for all of us and we've paid very, very diligent attention to moving forward to try to make sure none of us will be reliving that kind of a very tragic situation," said Toyota spokesman Irv Miller.

Toyota said owners could be notified of the recall as early as next week.

It will affect Toyota Camry sedans from 2007-2010, Toyota Avalon sedans from 2005-2010, Toyota Prius hybrids from 2004-2009, Tacoma pick-up trucks from 2005-2010, Tundra trucks from 2007-2010 and luxury Lexus models ES350 from 2007-2010 and 2006-2010 models of the IS250 and IS350.

The 3.8 million vehicles are equivalent to about two years of sales in the US for Toyota.

Toyota shares fell in Tokyo following the announcement.

I had this same problem when i bought the wife Focus CC3 The floor mat got stuck under the accelerator pedal and when i pushed the brake the accelerator pedal the car was racing faster.
I was really lucky not to crash the car this was on the drive from buying the car from the dealer.

Marsdendean In an automatic or manual, surly you would just stick it in N, and let it blow up??? Am i being thick or is it the americans being thick????

Some people don't react well in pressure situations, the obvious thing would be to switch the car off, or put it in N or P as the result has to be better than a 120mph crash.

Still inexcusable though for them to have such a stupid problem when it has occurred in the past.

When this happened to me i thought i had a stuck accelerator, you really do not have time to the striaght away as to whats happening.
Maybe part of the reason is you would expect this to be ironed out before it got to the production lines.
My car was a Auto and i guessing that the American cars are also auto's.
The best way to deal with this is to put the car into N and turn the key part of the way off or you could lock up your steering while keeping your foot on the brake penal and coasting to a stop.

Had my good wife been driving her car on that day she has said that she would be dead as she would not of thought to turn of the key and place the gear selector into N

I think you'll lose power steering and braking as soon as you turn the key even to the first position, won't you ?

IS200 Turbo project now just about complete ! See my thread here and leave your comments.
Now running standalone Syvecs ECU and no stock ECU !

The steering won't lock if the key is in the ignition (as far as I'm aware) and the key won't come out if the gearbox isn't in P.

Yeah I am sure you will lose power steering once you turn the ignition off. Then the steering will feel very heavy and this could feel like it's totally locked up (even though it's hasn't, just gone heavy).
