Web browser problems
This is weird. This morning my web brower(s) have started acting up.
I'm running XP, and Internet Explorer wouldn't work if I opened up a second page - it came up with a Data Execution Prevention Error and closed. The first window is fine, but I can't open up a second window or tab. Firefox is fine but Google Chrome doesn't work at all - when I start it up it just hangs, won't go to any web pages.
Tried disabling all IE add-ons and restoring all advanced settings to default - no difference.
I tried System Restore to a checkpoint from yesterday and that failed. I don't hold out a lot of hope that it would help even if it worked though, since I thought it seemed more like DLL problems than just settings.
I removed IE 8 and went back to IE 7. That worked fine. Can't remember if I tried Google Chrome at the time though.
Reinstalled IE 8 via Windows Update - second window/tab still won't open. No DEP errors this time, window just flashes open for a second then closes.
Edit - I also removed and reinstalled Google Chrome, and Google Chrome still won't work.
Any ideas ?

AVG Free Edition. Tried disabling the Resident Shield bit and that didn't help. Tried upgrading it from version 8 to version 9, no difference.
It must be spyware/malware, I think that's when you get that error message. Have you run any checks?
I haven't run a malware scan because I didn't think that could be it, but I will give it a go.
Tried rebooting in safe mode with networking - same problem.
Tried turning off all startup items and non-MS services via msconfig and rebooting, same problem.
Tried turning off DEP for IE by going into the Advanced Tab on My Computer Properties, same problem.

Everytime I've had a browser problem it's been spyware related, so was just my first thought - it wasn't backed up by any real knowledge
Is that hijack thingy the best tool for spyware nowadays then? Haven't used it before but will do from now on if it's the best one
To be honest, if someone else had reported the same thing to be, I would have suggested malware too. It's only because I'm so careful about what I click on etc, that it didn't actually cross my mind as a possibility myself !
Anyway, I'm running a scan by Malwarebytes at the moment.

malware bytes is good but I would recommend doing a hijack this scan aswell.
