Right, i have hit a financial problem and can't afford to get the timing belt changed by the garage.
But sick of not having my new parts on the car. So have decided to take on doing it myself.
Has anyone here done it themselves, as I have a couple of reservations.

First: I have read the main crank shaft bolt can be a bit difficult to get off. Can I leave the plugs in the engine to keep compression, and use that to hold the crank still while I crack the bolt off??

Second: How do I know how tight to set the belt after I have got it on??

Any other advice would be very handy, and if anyone knows any special tools I might need, going to get a big extension bar for the crank shaft bolt.

Cheers James

Doesn't it automatically get tensioned by the idler pulley (remember to consider replacing the pulleys) ?

I'm sure someone who's done it can give you better advice, but check out the online workshop manual guides for removing and installing the belt.

IS200 Turbo project now just about complete ! See my thread here and leave your comments.
Now running standalone Syvecs ECU and no stock ECU !

James it maybe worth holding fire to the funds are in place.
It is worth checking the condition of the belt before any delays though.
Normally it should be changed at 60,000 miles along with the tensioners.

Chances are that if you do the belt yourself your need to change the waterpump as well.
Where as if a garage does it your not need to do the waterpump in most cases.

I have got a new waterpump too.
I am at 78k and the belt hasn't been changed. So am a little worried about leaving it any longer.
If I was to check the condition of the belt and tensioners, I think I might as well change the belt.
Plus have new radiator hoses and tensioner and idler too fit too. :w00t:

You only have to pull back the top of the cambelt cover and have a peek at the belt to check it out.

I could be wrong, but I don't think we've got a walkthrough on here, but it would be good to have one !
