How difficult would it be to mount another set of speakers in the rear doors???

I have a spare set of door cards, so can use the grill off the front.

Any thoughts? Or just hard work? LOL!

Will be hard work, do you not have the shelf speakers?

Yeah, but want to get more noise in the cabin.

Don't want to use a sub in the boot, as IMO they mess up the sound stage.
Think some some meaty speakers in the rear doors would work well.

I hear a couple of comp. cars run 8" subs in the rear doors, but you need strong door builds and lots of dynamat extreme.

What you will effectively do is use the door as a ported sub box. There are some good free air 8" subs out there. It is something I am currently playing with for the Prius, but the wiring is really complex if I want to keep all the OEM functions like sat nav, HU, bouetooth etc. The good thing with the Prius the rear doors will hold 8" subs with little modification!!

I'm not sure whether they do this because it's the most practical or if it's better but high end OEM car audio installs always put the bass on the rear shelf and mids and high on the rear doors - is that because the boot acts as the sub box?

Yeah, its because there is more space in the boot for the larger speakers needed to produce the bass. :w00t:
