Evo 46g3 units are very tough as long as they are serviced Oil changes are done at 4500 miles with plugs and timing belts done every 45,000 miles.
Evo standard boost pressure is set at 1.2 bar for the Evo IV and just under 1.0 bar on the early Evo 1>3
Always stay away from a car that dash board light stay on as every light in this area should be off when pulling away from stand still.
Most Evo clutches are not very strong and can wear out quickly.
Gearboxes can also wear out and can be difficult in 1st 2nd and 5th gear and watch out for the gearbox whining. And as you're already guessed are not cheap to change.
Evo have had recalls over the years so please check that they have had all outstanding work carried out by chatting with your dealer.
LSD Can also cost a lot to repair upwards of £1800
Also check that the ACD PUMP is working properly it should have a green light when switching between snow/ gravel and tarmac.
Check tyre wear for the car geometry all tyres should wear even.
Break fluid should be changed every 18,000 miles most EVO have had their brake up graded so have them checked.
Rust can be found on the boot lids and suspension first so this should be your starting point when checking for rust.

why not go for a volvo t6???more room for the kids and faster than the evos better on fuel than the evo,the evo is slightly faster through the corners though..
thats why the traffic up here got rid of the evos....to much to run and not as fast as the volvo!!!shocked i was......

its not uncommon for clutches only to last 2500 miles!!!my friend destroyed one after 20-30 launches!!!!!

some of the volvo owners do a few not to expensive mods turn up the boost and are running 400-600 bhp!!!!on standard insides!!!!!!!!
