Haven't used my car since Monday, went out to it today and it won't start. Not even trying to turn over, just getting that clicking sound I've heard before, this just means a flat battery right?

Bought this battery in Jan 2011, couldn't be dead already could it?

yeah sounds like just a battery issue, did you leave any lights on like map lights? it may be an alternator problem not charging the battery properly, if you have a volt meter check see what the figures read.

Battery by the sounds of it.

Check your connections at the battery terminal. I had my battery out and forgot to clamp it back in place, over time with it moving about it loosened the negative clamp and wouldn't start for me one morning.

Good chance that battery could still be under warranty. Depends on where you got it.

Nope no lights on, and the run on Monday was a long high speed run as I drove from Stansted. Got the battery from Lexus, what's the warranty on those ones?

Don't have a voltmeter unfortunately, but even if it was the alternator could the battery have gone from fine on Monday to completely flat on Saturday?

Does the central locking work? Do the headlights light up if you switch them on?

I'd check the battery connections. I thought my new battery died a while ago. After hours of charging the car still wouldn't turn over and even the dash lights were struggling. It turned out the plus cable on the battery had become a little bit loose. After tightening the nut everything was fine again.

Cool I'll speak to the dealer then.

Central locking was fine, all lights came up on dash fine too, radio came on but after a few seconds cut out.

Just jumped the car, started first time without hesitation - took it on a short run, brought it back, left it for a while and still started again fine. This is a little baffling and a bit worrying to take the car out now, will have to do a few tests on it during the week.

Shame you did not have a volt meter to check the battery volts, generally a quick simple diagnosis can tell you simply if the battery is failing or something had drawn current from it,
Generally if the battery volts are between 10.5 and 12.1, it is the battery failing.
Generally if the voltage is less then 7-8v then that would indicate you had probably left something on.

I'm happy to go out and buy one, not sure what I would do with it though (GCSE electronics has all but left me!) - what would I be checking, just the voltage at the battery?

How accurate is the battery voltage gauge on the dash, forgot to look at it when it didn't start, but once I jump started the car it was pointing in the region of 12-14V.

If I had alternator trouble though would there be other tell tale signs when the car is running?
