Just got the lex mot'd this morning and she passed but got an advisory on some play on the front nearside ball joint. I remember this being a common issue but what will this do to my car? Make the handling a bit dodgy I guess? The car needs its Geo doing so will probs get both sides done then the Geo

handling can be bad, uneven tyre wear, knocking, clunking sounds...
worst that can happen - and it did happen for some drivers - ball joint pops out and you will end up like this:

and you dont want that...

Ouch! Now I really don't want that!! Recently I've felt the car to be a bit light at the front end so I'll get both sides done asap. I assume both sides should be done at the same time?

it is recomended, but it is not necessary. ask someone to inspect the other, because if its still good it can last 6k or even 20k+ miles, so no point of changing a good part. or you can just change both and forget about them for a good period of time

Wheels should be aligned after that

And when putting the new ones back in use a bit of grease on the taper. Easier to remove in future.

I do really advice oem toyota ball joints. I had replaced them for some cheap ebay ones and after 6 months there was allready some play on the balljoints. So then i replaced them and bought oem ball joints. Now driving for a year and no play on it

Its been 4 years and 60k miles since fitting my ebay ones.. no wear all solid. At the state run car inspection center they have a machine to test ball joints with computerised outputs. Result was zero movement

Got them both changed for blueprint ones at the start of July and the car is totally different now! Drives like new with no knocking at all. Need to get my Geo done yet though and still got the light floaty feeling at speed so will look into that next and also change the drop links
