Tablet Install
Tablet Install
Been looking replacing my headunit with a tablet, read far too much information, all saying different ways to do it and I'm confusing myself. Anybody here done it and what pitfalls do I need to look out for?
The way I'm proposing to do it is by simply splicing into the lighter and adding another one hidden underneath. So when the car is on, it's always being charged and when the car is turned off power is cut to the tablet and it goes into sleep mode. Audio is being sorted via the 3.5mm jack to RCA to amp to speakers method. With a manual gain controller sorting out volume.
It sounds too simple...
The only issue I can find is wanting to connect other USB decives and powering the tablet. Which is a £30 Nexus 7. Apparently they don't like USB hubs and charging. Which in a car is a problem. My problem is, I'm clueless with this stuff, I use my 'smartfone' in the same way I did back in the 3310 days. Only I've swapped Snake for this website and Liverpoolfc.com...
You can get powered hubs for the Nexus 7, make sure it's OTG compatible and you should be okay.
Yeah I was reding about them last night, you need to be careful which OTG to use. This is from reading threads when they first came out, so I'm assuming there is more on the market now that work.
It's the flashing a new ROM and kernels??? thats confusing me now and setting up the Nexus for more in-car use. Plenty of info on the web though, so should be able to do it without 'bricking' my tablet.
I'm sticking a Nexus7 in the Supra and I'm planning on just using a software switch to put it in docked mode when it detects the USB DAC. I'm going to have mine as a removable unit though.
My current set up is tablet > USB DAC > audison bit one > 4 channel amp > speakers
I'm using the audison controllerfor master volume and then plugging the phone hands free into the bit one, as this will auto interrupt the audio.
I'm just gonna go out from the headfone jack for now, with a gain controller, see what the quality is like. I've read they can be a bit rubbish without a DAC.
I'm gonna try and make mine as easy to remove as possibe. Basically gonna try to have it so the tablet and fascia just clip in to the headunit space.
How you powering yours? I was planning on sticking one of them USB lighter replacements spurred into the cig lighter. But I've read that they can struggle getting enough juice to the tablet to charge it when in heavy use. So may use a DCDC USB instead.
You gone with WiFi/3G or just WiFi? Should be with me today, so if the rest of the stuff turn up as well, I can get round to trail fitting.
I have an EE mifi dongle that I use for work, so if I ever need internet in the car I just take it with me.
Power is going to be a wired in USB behind the dash, I've not put that in yet as I'm still waiting for some parts to be delivered.
I would recommend getting the paid up version of Poweramp though, as you can swipe to change track
I haven't even looked at apps yet. All I know so far is, I want Torque, sat nav and music playing. Gonna look into getting radio into the car at a later date, just a DVB-T needed as far as I can tell. Never owned a tab before and I've never really used apps on my fone, so I don't really know what is out there. A lot of it is going to be trial and error. I was reading on some android forum about making a custom background with buttons and shiz so you can do everything with just the screen (volume up,down and power off, etc) but it's way over my head. Hopefully it turns up today and I can have a little play around with it.
You can get DAB over USB. Whetherthis will work with the Nexus, I don't know. I was thinking about doing it though. I'll be using a USB stick to hold most of my music, as this is an easy way of moving music into the car when I want to.
