steviewevie Just like the iPod really. Apple make out like they invented MP3 players, but of course they didn't, others were there way beforehand. They just jumped on the bandwagon, did a cool design (which they're good at), and did as much as possible to lock people into the iPod (just like they do with the iPhone).

I'm the same with the I-pod, never liked the sound quality unless i plugged it into my speaker base, i just use my 80gb Archos DVR now, its a great bit of kit too 5" screen and holds quite a few dvd's and it plugs into the tv to record or playback films :thumbup1:

It doesn't have all the sound effects of the I-pod but it does sound pretty good, i use a set of JVC RX300 headphones and the bass is great through them for a set that wasn't too pricey? and i cant stand in ear phones as they irritate me stupid?
I did have a set of Grado headphones and wish i still had them, as there the best i've ever heard, the Grado wooden gs1000i version go for around £1000 a set, i got mine for just over £100 on ebay, then left them in Florida :crying::crying::Chair:
Sony's MP3 players have a good reputation for sound quality, including the supplied headphones.
But with any MP3 player, you'll get much better sound if you don't use the (cheap) headphones supplied with it, but pay for some better ones. In some recent reviews that I read, Sony MDR-X300 in-ear headphones (approx £30) did as well in a "real-world" test (i.e. blind test with non-experts listening to them) as £180 Sennheiser IE8 in-ear phones.
Good idea, was a bit confused at the new thread as it said that I started it but now I get it :tongue_smilie:
I really like the ear canal phones actually, once they're in after a few minutes I don't even feel they're there. I agree they aren't great if you're walking as you hear your footsteps but otherwise fine.
Was thinking of getting some bose quietcomforts for plane journeys and stuff but the phones you had sound immense! £1000 for a pair? You got them for a bargain though, shame you lost them, although where in Florida, might be able to have a look next time I'm there
The problem with the sennheisers if those are from the range I'm thinking of is that the really expensive ones are designed with studio sound in mind, and therefore don't have the depth of range that a much cheaper set might have so it can sometimes be a slightly unfair comparison.
I got the Klipsch S4s, they were about £65 I think but been pretty happy with the sound quality, and they have a good amount of sound insulation too - used them on the plane over xmas and watching inflight movies was such a different experience!
The Grado set i had were a very very good set of headphones, If you ever get chance to try a set, do you'll be quite surprised at the acoustic nature they have, you seem to hear everything that's going on in the songs you listen to?
Think the thing with I-pods etc, is that everybody has a different level of hearing and some sounds don't sound the same, so everyone has a different outlook on what sound quality there hearing, even though the I-pod does seem to have a good level, to me it's not what i like?
I brought the I-pod I have because I thought it would be very good after all the hype about them, but compared to my very very old archos that i had, the archos sound quality was amazing and blew the I-pod away with the sound quality and ease of use?
Yeah I definitely want to have a listen to pair of those at some point, just to see what they're like.
I don't actually think with the iPod though that it's not a sound that I like, I think it's just really poor sound - I'm not one of those crazy audiophiles who thinks MP3 is rubbish and stuff, personally I'd struggle to tell the difference between CD and a 192Kbps MP3 unless it was going through a really high end audio system.
As an example if I play the same track through my car kit off the iPod and then off an SD card, the difference in sound quality really is quite big and I have the same problem via headphones as well - anyone at the ace meet next month can have a listen and let me know that I'm not being crazy and there really is a big difference :tongue_smilie:
