How to De-Butterfly the Celica Gen 7 airbox?
How to De-Butterfly the Celica Gen 7 airbox?
Did this the other day on mine, and does seem to give a better response and a lot better sound? the Butterfly/silencer is quite restrictive when you look at it, so quite understandable that it should work better without it fitted With respect to the Celica club for the info :thumbup1:
Usual Workshop disclaimers apply!!!
The tools you will need for this are..
A Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket,
Looking at your air box you will locate three clips holding the lid of the air box on, they are located as shown below in red. once all three are undone please move to the next step.
Top retaining clips..
Take you screwdriver and undo the rubber hose connecting the air box to the throttle body and push back off the air box once undone. this will give you some room to move though very little.( ^^above pic!^^)
If you wish to remove the whole top section then your maf sensor located near to the pipe you removed will need to be unplugged and the Maf can be left in place. taking the top off will let you have some room to do the following but not needed if you wish to try and work in a tight space. The top of the airbox needs to be pushed backwards out of its retaining clips, this lets you remove the lid?
Picture of the airbox top holding clips..
At the back of the air box there is a rubber pipe connected, disconnect this (only vacuum) it is located near and above one of the centre clips.
once undone you should now grab the air box top half and lift the rear upwards towards you while keeping the front still in place at about 30 degrees you will be able to push the air box top back, this unit will now lift off and in place you will see you filter and your volume/butterfly valve.
Vacuum pipe to be removed..
To remove the filter just lift out and put to one side?
If you wish to remove the Volume valve/Butterfly Valve then pull out the vacuum pipe as shown, this may hiss, but don't worry its all OK! Grab the unit and just lift/slide vertically out, that's that done.
Butterfly Valve/volume valve..
Filter and Butterfly Valve removed,
Take the pipe you disconnected and push back into its place in the airbox, there is no need to worry about this being affected, or the car to that point. You need to plug this pipe using some top hat type plug (or a screw/bolt) Or it will bring the CEL light on!!
Then refit is the reversal of the above (minus the butterfly/silencer part)
Gives a throatier sound to the car, seems to respond better to your right foot, and seems to run a lot smoother than before :thumbup:
Free Mods like this are great
.
Sounds like a great mod ! So what is the butterfly supposed to do in the first place ? Is it just to keep it quieter ?
dimis Nice description mate. So did you start the mods on the Celica???:thumbup1: It was about time mate
