Thinking of replacing the Pug with one of these and it has to be an auto for the missus. Can anyone tell me what they're like...how long do the boxes last for, any commom issues and what to look out for when viewing apart from the normal. What would be the idle mileage to get and when are cambelts due?

Looking at early 2000 models like this and budget is a max of £3k but would prefer to spend less.

We have a 2001 Civic 1.4 se auto.

We bought it off my partners godmother for £1800. It had only 22,000 miles on it.

It's not quick, but it does the job. It just needed 4 tyres (due to cracking), one major service and an MOT. AC regas and nothing more exciting than that.

In my opinion, it is a car you buy with your head and certainly not with your heart. You won't love it but as a means of reliable transport, you can't go wrong.

That's what we're looking for, something reliable and good on MPG. From September the missus has to take our son to school and it's 22 miles each way, so 88 miles a day! :crying:

We would look for a diesel but there don't seem to be many Jap motors in autos within our budget.

Looking on Parkers the 1.4 Civic gives 39mpg, how many do you get? They give the same mpg for the 1.6 as well though, that can't be right?!

Another problem is I haven't seen many 1.4 Civics for sale, mainly 1.6.

When we first got ours the MPG was very very bad. We were getting early to mid 20's which was only slightly better than what the LS was getting, and that's a 4.3 weighing in at over 2 tonnes. This was partly due to the way it had been driven before. Very slowly and short journeys only.

Since it's service we are getting early to mid 30's. It does play up a little when it's cold (chugging under light acceleration) but the odd tank of vpower sorts it out for 5 or 6 tanks of unleaded.

A friend of ours has the 1.6 civic which has the vtec engine (the 1.4 is non vtec but looks identicle under the bonet to the 1.6) and gets similar mpg but it is substantionaly quicker. That's not to say the 1.4 is that slow. It will do a happy cruise at 80mph but it's more happy at 70 on the motorway.

If your about Harlow way and want to have a look at ours your more than welcome.

Jim.

Quick question for you mate, how do you engage gear on your car? Most autos have a button you press but the civic I saw the other day didn't and I couldn't figure it out! lol.

Foot on foot break to release the lever?

totally worn out and broken, shouting 'Holy ****, WHAT A RIDE!'"

Yep it's foot on the brakes - it's about 50/50 as to whether it has a button or not, out of our cars the merc, toyota and lexus have no buttons, the mini does (but still needs the brakes on too)

It has no button. Brake down does the trick.

cant go wrong with civics. I had a 2000 v plate 1.4iS 5dr mb2 and got it with 24k on the clock and sold it with 98k on it. They will keep running as long as u take care of it. Blueprint parts are the best to use and also check the suspension as 2 of my shocks leaked at about 60ish k miles when i had it. Mine was a manual but was a good car. As for belts they should be changed at about 70k miles not sure about years though. If you need any more help or info then gimme a shout. Also in the mb2 watch out for the common heater resistor pack issue as well but thats an easy fix. Cant think of anything else yet
