Registration Plates
Registration Plates
My car just failed it's very first MOT test  Reason given was that front plate did not have black characters on a white background, and rear plate did not have black characters on a yellow background.
I thought buying my plates from a DVLA registered manufacturer would ensure they were legal but apparently not according to my local Lexus dealership. The plates have the domed carbon fibre lettering like this:
Anyone else had a similar problem?
thats not good news at all terry, sorry to hear that, but those types of plates are in the eyes of the laws 'show plates only', ask back at the dealer you got the car from to supply the original road legal plates that should of come with the car and ask them to refund the MOT price for messing you around by supplying the car with the wrong type of plates, then just swap them back to the CF ones but keep the origainals in the boot in case plod try the trick at the side of the road. hope this helps.
No but they do look good !!!!
Just put on another cheap set then put back on your good set once it passes the mot
They must be a bit **** for failing you for that
Different type but same principal but:
My mum's MR2 went in the other day and failed for "front and rear registration plates likely to be misread"
Now, because hers has an Irish private plate on it, it goes XXI 153 (the first two digits covered by x's), and the tester was like "the 1 and the I look the same so it can be misread".
I just thought no because the 1 and I are the same, so we got a refund from them after speaking to VOSA and getting it confirmed, and went to somewhere else

at least it didnt work out all bad for you then mate some testers would of made you swap them there and then and then charged you as well so good result, just lucky you drive a nice car and the boss wanted to keep your car looking as good as it should.

B*llocks mate. Carbon lettering is one of the very few 'custom' styles that are still legal IIRC.

Crazy just crazy.
I have to put my road plates in the boot when my car goes in for it mot.
My plates is classed as illegal due to the spacing of the letters but in no way are the letter trying to read any different to the way they should.
Ie xx xxx is the way they want them, mine show x x x x x
Do like your carbon look Terry

Some people are just pathetic,
MOT testers should be required to show customers the rule that shows a failure IMHO, instead of what they interpret as the rule
