MOT time
MOT time
So.., the old girls coming up for service + mot time (the car not the wife) and I was looking at using my local kwik-fit as it's right by the station and is just so darn convenient for a pre work drop off and post work pick up.
My question to you is as follows.
My timing belt, sparks and air filter have all been replaced some 1500 miles ago, so that strips the need for a full service. Looking at the difference between an oil change and interim, only the following additional checks are included for an additional 100 squidlies in the interim service.
However; wouldn't an mot look at most of these. So what should I go for oil change or interim?
Full Brake Check
Steering Check
Shock Absorbers Check
Suspension Check
If your oil needs changing, change it apart from that the MOT will look at the other things.
Perfect pass again. A couple of advisories (brake fluid+coolant flush) but other than that this car seems bullet proof.
but !£75 for a coolant replacement ? Surely that's a five minute job. Brake fluid £50 is slightly more palatable.
Coolant replacement is a DIY job yes?
im a mobile mechanic and charge about 40 for a coolant change and the brake fluid change should be about the same, what reason did he give you for the brke fluid being a advisory as they can only check for moisture content.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water, over 2 years it "could" be contaminated, but if the water content test says its OK don't worry.
Coolant "flush" should be adding a cleaning chemical to your cooling system and then replacing everything, not always recommended a few manufacturers (Honda for 1) advise against this procedure. Just changing all your coolant is easy enough to do , just watch for air locks when re-filling. You can use Toyota/Lexus or there are several "universal" coolants that are rated exactly the same as OEM but cost less - read the labels.
I'd love to know which MOT tester gives advisories for brake fluid and a coolant change, just so I can stay away from them!
Jeez......
what i was trying to figure out is did they test for this or just say, as there is ways and devices that you can use to check what the moisture content is in the brake fluid, iv never known this be checked on a mot so was just a bit puzzled with them giving you a advisory for this as its a quiet time for some garages and they might just be trying to get some work out of you, when people hear that there might be some thing wrong with your brakes as a example they panic and day just do the work needed
