Having personal experience of changing both, my advice/experience is as follows...

Pro's:
  • Huge increase in light output (3x Brigher for 35W, 4x Brighter for 55w) I've got 35W kits in main and dipped and they are more than bright enough.

  • Looks good, you can choose anything from JDM yellow right up to purple if you want. But most go for 5000K (pure white) or 6000K (white with a bluey tint)

  • Reduced power consumption, if you use the 35W ballasts you are saving yourself 80W of current draw (assuming you do all 4 lights) so less stress on the battery/alternator.
Con's:
  • Can be expensive, although there are some ridiculously cheap kits out now (some of them are even cheaper that a pair of good bulbs!)

  • This isn't an issue with the dipped beam because they come on and stay on, but HID's take around 10 seconds to warm up to full brightness from a cold start. But once they have been used once, they normally come on at full brightness instantly or after a 1-2 quick warm up. But either way, I've found the light output is fantastic, and matches that of a normal halogen bulb even during the warmup phase.

The one thing I would say is the main reason I changed the full beam as well is because I didn't like the 'murky' bit you got in the light pattern where the nice white/blue HID light met the normal colour yellowy light from the OEM bulbs.

If you get good quality HIDS just on dipped you will find there is little point in using high beam, so save your money and just do the dipped.

I agree, most of the time I don't bother using my main beams unless it's late at night and there's little chance of oncoming traffic.

The only reason I changed them at all was so the colour matched the dipped beams becase I'm fussy like that. lol

I've got HID's for my main and dipped beam - 5000k dipped, 6000k main both 35w.
I got them both off ebay for £40 each and they've never missed a beat, more than happy with them.
Well impressed with the main beam in particular, yeah it takes a few seconds to warm up once they're there, they light up the road like daylight and you can see the distinct outline of the reflector up ahead.
