Braodband & Static IPs
Braodband & Static IPs
OK so i need to get hold of a static IP address for one of my networks at the Storage Yard for remote access
it has a Standard BT broadband now i have a sneaky feeling that BT wont offer a static IP unless im on business broadband which i dont really fancy paying out for
So with that in mind i know places like DYNdns offer a redirect service but wanna charge for the privilege are there any others ?
any of the IT gurus here know the best way i can do this or recommend a way....
A BT Home Hub should allow you to assign it one static IP address. You only need a Business Hub for 5 or 13 static addresses. This is about the sum total of my knowledge on this, I may be wrong, and can probably not answer any follow up questions! But I'm sure others will, "IT Support" is the number one profession among Outlaws, I think!
Someone poke Toxo, he's the networking support guy isn't he?
Correct Rabster, BT will only let you have a static external IP address if you are a business customer. You simply cannot do it with their home user products.
Your options are a dynamic dns service such as dyndns which are not without their flaws (depends on remote peoples dns caches having low refresh times) or switching supplier to one that does allow you to have a static external IP address.
Send me the postcode for the building and I'll see if I can recommend an unbundled supplier.
Yep i was going to recommend Be Unlimited as they are cheaper than BT but give upto 24Mb and 1 static IP is included. However it is telephone exchange dependant.
In the mean time however NO-IP is good (and free) and I have used them before:

It uses software on a machine on the network rather than router settings to update the address.
There are plenty of others out there.
