When Toyota make a forced induction engine, it has an air temp sensor in the airbox and one in the manifold. That way it can tell the difference between the temp of the air pre and post compression. As far as I'm aware the IS only has the one sensor, so I'd guess it needs to go close to the manifold. It should really be reading air temp from as close to the MAP sensor as possible. The ECU needs both figures to calculate speed-density.
