Private Plates.....
Private Plates.....
I've just been stopped by a very nice policeman for my illegal plates - see below.
He let me off with a warning as he liked the car and the reg and thought the £60 fine was too much!!
He said they are getting hotter on stopping cars with illegal plates - the font and spacing are the main reasons.
If you get stopped and fined the first time, you ALSO have to send photo evidence to DVLA that you have now got legal plates and if you don't the DVLA can confiscate your reg (and get money for selling it again) and issue you with a new boring plate number.
If you get stopped twice, you get fined and the reg automatically confiscated.
At least that is what he told me and what the info leaflet says that he gave me - whether it really happens ... no idea but I have put boring legal plates on mine for now
If it still reads what you want when legal, I wouldn't bother, just isn't worth the hassle.........
Regtransfers and Newreg are the main license plates sites, if you look on those and the DVLA site you should get decent coverage of all available plates

Sparkystav Im not sure thats quite right.
they cant take it off you but they can ban you from putting it on a vehicle.

Stoney I think the lady may be right Stav. I remember reading something along those lines when I got my BS10NEY plate not long ago. Pick up 2 or 3 cautions and/or fines for having it not legally set out, and I'm pretty sure they can remove your plates as well as your entitlement to use them, and then (at a later date) reissue the plate to someone else.
What I find a useful trick, if you know your plates are not legal, is to carry a fully legal set in the boot. If, or should I say when, you are pulled, give it the old, "Oh, I'm so sorry, I've just been to a show/cruise, on private land, and must have forgot the change them back!" Change them back immediately, and 9 times out of 10 you will get away without any repercussions. I have seen a friend do this absolutely loads of times (Her two initials, the 57 WRX on a small plate) and never get a fine or even a warning. (The fact she has breasts and plays the clueless girl often helps her case! Whereas in reality she half built her Scooby!) One time the other guy we were with got a fine and ordered to remove his plates, she just screwed on legal ones and drove away clean.

I got collared by a CSO when I had my really really small front plate fitted. I didn't get the fine but I got a note recorded against the car that I had been 'advised' I had to change my front plate and if I got stopped again for it there would be no excuses, just an immediate fine! I think that was because that's all a CSO can do in that situation though... Needless to say all my cars now have legal plates on them!
