here you go Rabs from the dark side............

Hi all, if you have suffered from your key getting stuck in the ACC or other positions, then its time to get another lock barrel ! ( Have a look for a temporary remedy under the heading " Key stuck in the ACC position?? ")

your options are A ) get another barrel cut to match your existing key approx £85 OR B ) get a complete lock set and new keys - £135 +vat etc but then you will have to spend more time changing ALL the locks on the car.

ok, firstly read the workshop disclaimer and then we can start,

read the disclaimer??????

ok good! LOL

TOOL LIST:
a short or medium length philips screwdriver.
a small allen key or any other " L " shaped implement that has a short " _ " bit that is about 2mm in dia.

firstly i would disconnect the battery( its no good turning the ignition off as you will have to use the key in a bit)

1. Remove the driver side footwell kickplate- to do this lift up the plastic edging that runs along the door opening and by the side of the gas pedal is a little black plastic nut - take that off then give the kick plate a firm pull, now that it has been removed...........

2. Remove the 3 screws that hold the big panel on that is underneath the steering wheel, (the bonnet release handle, rear fog light and headlamp adjuster is on it) there is one screw under the steering wheel, and one in each side/corner, once all the screws are out GENTLY but firmly pull the panel away - i say gently as you have switches and wires and the aircon/ climate control sensor attached to this panel once you have the panel loose start disconnecting the switches 3 off and then take off the aircon temp sensor - as it is off get the vacum and give it bit of a clean.
you do not need to take off the bonnet release - just let the panel sit on the floor.

3. You now need to remove the panel that is around the instrument cluster - there are 2 screws at the very top, once these are removed give it a little tug and it will come free - disconnect the instrument brightness switch, now rotate the trim panel to the left and slide it off the steering wheel column - it might be easier if you lower the steering wheel a bit.
BE CAREFUL NOT TO SCRATCH THE CLEAR LENS OF THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER!!!!!

4. Remove the machine screw that holds the light ring around the ingition lock, now follow the lead from the light ring and disconnect it - mine was covered in a blue cover

MAKE SURE THAT IT IS THE LIGHT RING CABLE YOU ARE DISCONNECTING,THE AIRBAG CABLE IS ALSO IN THIS AREA!!!!! I BELIEVE THIS IS A FARLY THICK YELLOW CABLE - BUT PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE DISCONNECTING THE LIGHT RING CABLE - IF YOU ARE IN ANY DOUBT WHATSO EVER THEN YOU CAN LEAVE IT CONNECTED BUT YOU ARE THEN LIMITED ON SPACE.

5. Now get a good light and have a look at the top of the ingition lock housing - you should see a small indentation , it is actually a hole but as you are restriced in what you see it looks like an indentation, insert your key and turn it to the ACC position, get the allen key, bent fork etc and insert it into this hole, it will feel a bit springy as you are depressing a small pin, at the same time as depressing the pin pull on the key and the ingition barrel unit will come free, if it doesnt then make sure it is in the ACC position and that you have the correct hole!!!

to insert your new cylinder assy put the key in it and again turn the key to the ACC position, now just slide the whole assy into the cylinder housing, turn the key to LOCK" and remove the key - just check that it all works now !!!!

you can now rebuild everything in an exact reverse of the way you took it off.

I know that it sounds complicated to do but trust me it isnt!! it took me 30 mins from start to finish and i have never done it before!

any Q's then please PM me.

cheers rob.
