Ideally you will want it to be an FR layout, as you can then use the W154 box from the supe. Anything MR will require a transaxle thatll handle the power, which can be difficult to source, although the more modern audi fwd boxes can fall into this category, due to the layout of the engines. Downside being the expense of them, plus making them bolt up properly.

I like the idea of an MX5, nice and light to make the most of the powahhhhh

Close, you've combined 2 different gearboxes there... R154 or W58 Wink Looking likely I'll buy a new R154 from Toyota at the moment to be honest! Maybe slap a few Marlin Crawler hardened parts on there to get away from any 1st gear failure from the V8's torque output.

Yeah I'd sorted that out already in my head. I just don't think a transverse V8 would look right and there aren't a lot of cars around where it would fit in the middle

Once it's out it's going to get a good service. I've got a new gasket set on order, and I'll do the usual oil and water pump and belt changes. I'm going to change the rods for some H-beam ones as the stock rods are pencil thin. Then I'll reassemble the bottom end with ARP bolts and new bearings. I'm undecided yet whether to get the block honed and fit new piston rings at this point, I may not bother. My thoughts are that I don't want to have to open the bottom end again if I can avoid it so I should do everything required, but at the same time it ain't broke.

It's done 117,000 miles so it will probably need the valve shims redoing although it wasn't too tappy when I ran it. I've thought about converting to 1ZZ/2ZZ shimless buckets to lighten the valve train but the VVTi heads are already shim-under-bucket (the older 1UZ is shim-over-bucket - another plus for the later engine) and I'm not sure the weight saving will be worth the hassle or cost! I don't intend to raise the rev limit much so I don't think I'd see the benefit. New lairier exhaust cams are on the cards, but not too lairy as it will stay on stock management to begin with.

Depending on the target chassis it may need converting to a mid-sump layout to clear ARBs, steering racks, subframes or whatever else. The sump is at the front when fitted in the LS400. That requires a sump, oil pan, oil pickup and baffle plate from a Soarer 1UZ. The only real modification required is that the holes on the Soarer sump need boring out 2mm as the bolts that hold the VVTi sump on are larger.

There has been a couple done before, but they are very very rare.

You'll all be thrilled to know that I'm in the process of buying something for the V8 to live in. More news hopefully next week.

Also I'm on the lookout for an older broken 1UZ should anyone happen to come across one... Got a budget of £200 or so, something with head gasket failure or a snapped cambelt would be nice! Needs to NOT be VVTi, one from a Soarer would be great.
