Unfortunately I have to use MS Office, suppliers, customers et all use it so I have to be able to open all file formats thrown my way, and Microsoft covers 99% of things. Then again I didn't have to pay for my legit copy of Office 2007 Ultimate so may as well use it. I can totally understand people who just don't want to pay for tools that have free equivalents.
Just going to go for a legit copy of Win7 Ultimate, and go from there - its all tax deductible so that helps bring the real cost below £100.
OpenOffice is 100% MS format compatible mate...
It's a free download from here, try it and see that it opens all your docs/spreadsheets/databases/presentations ok
About the only thing that's not 100% is the VBA support but most people don't use that level of interaction...
