New car time, need some suggestions
DaveEdin Mazda 3 MPS is a hatchback though :thumbup1:
Kev (dandydons) has one of them, so ask him what it's like
reidy +1 for the Corolla T Sport
The boot is pretty big, I have a three door and I got a 4ft aquarium in the back (seats down obviously) not so long ago

It is very loud on lift mate (above 6200 rpm) but a very nice kind of loud.
I think it's like a standard toyota really, same plastic interior, looks better though.
Ours has 114k and no problems.
Nice amount of torque when we were fully loaded going to japshow.
Back windows don't open on the 3dr, you'd be better with the 5dr for dogs. I suspect you may need a roof box if you have loads of luggage. Its a spacious car for its size but its not a big car really.
The auxiliary belt is inspected every 60k, but most with sense change it then. Has a timing chain so that should be good for the life of the engine. Servicing is very straightforward, sparks every 60k, oil + filter etc every 10k, coolant 100k (toyota long life), brake fluid 20k (I think). I change the oil + filter in mine every 5k but that's because I thrash it lol.
One problem the earlier models suffer from is snapping lift bolts, the 2zz engine has 2 bolts that hold the cams in place, they're prone to wearing and on the earlier versions the bolts could actually snap, its not a disaster if it happens, you just loose lift. 2003 onwards cars have the revised bolts that don't wear as quickly. Its a 30 min job to replace the bolts and they cost about 75p each.
As for noise this video speaks volumes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2FnunvHi4g
The engine is not that torquey but its not really a heavy car
I like the interior in mine, feels well built. The yaris interior (even on the new one) feels cheap and nasty
:w00t: That noise...love it!
The missus was actually looking at the Corolla before deciding on the Civic but the 1.6, she's not happy I'm looking at them now! lol. Told her I'm downsizing to a smaller car, she has no idea I'm looking at the T Sport though! :whistling:
As for the dogs I've told her whenever they come with us they'll be going in her car but I'll take them in mine if we're only going up the road. We'll probably use her car to go away in being an auto so gonna get roof bars for that.
What's this lift everyone is mentioning as well, Toyota terminology I assume? I'm glad you've said it's a chain, that's something that won't need doing then but obviously still needs inspecting. I'll look for a 2003 model then to be on the safe side. If the bolts do need changing is it a DIY job, do the cams need locking? What are they like to work on when changing parts like the aux belt, brakes, suspension etc?
The interior on the Yaris is horrible, really didn't like my mates. I'm not a fan of interiors full of gadgets either so the Corolla does look good to me, I was just abit dubious of the build quality.
What kind of MPG do you get on a run as well?
Is there any reason why used ones sell quite cheaply as well, aren't they a sought after car?
If we're talking similar money and running costs then the Accord to me is the no-brainer decision - they will be worlds apart as cars plus a proper estate will be so much more useful if you take holidays in the car with the dogs.........
However I have no idea of the comparative costs between the two so ignore if the corolla works out loads cheaper.
If your around at the weekend You are more than welcome to meet up and go for a spin in mine,
Lift is when you hit 6200rpm right up to 8200rpm, you get a sudden release of an extra 50bhp of power and boy can you feel it.
Just as most cars start to run out of power around the 6k mark, these little engines just light up and explode in a glory of acceleration and a wonderful mechanical induction roar,
As you accelerate hard you are looking down at the rev counter waiting for it to hit "lift", and that is when most other cars realise this little jap **** grandads car is not to be raced against.
Me and Oli have had some bigger cars have a go with us, but when they try and fail to get any where near, they drop back and dont try again.
Quote:VVTL-i (Variable Valve Timing and Lift intelligent system) is a version that can alter valve lift (and duration) as well as valve timing. In the case of the 16 valve 2ZZ-GE, the engine has 2 camshafts, one operating intake valves and one operating exhaust valves. Each camshaft has two lobes per cylinder, one low rpm lobe and one high rpm, high lift, long duration lobe. Each cylinder has two intake valves and two exhaust valves. Each set of two valves are controlled by one rocker arm, which is operated by the camshaft. Each rocker arm has a slipper follower mounted to the rocker arm with a spring, allowing the slipper follower to move up and down with the high lobe without affecting the rocker arm. When the engine is operating below 6000-7000 rpm (dependent on year, car, and ECU installed), the low lobe is operating the rocker arm and thus the valves. When the engine is operating above the lift engagement point, the ECU activates an oil pressure switch which pushes a sliding pin under the slipper follower on each rocker arm. This in effect, switches to the high lobe causing high lift and longer duration
Aye must T sport owners are lift addicts lol

Cheers for the explanation, it certainly sounds and looks addictive!! What's the mpg like on a run though?
