My Indecisive 4.0 V8 1UZ-FE Project
Secured the battery today. I have a few reservations about it but it's clamped down now.
It's not quite straight and I wanted to put some large washers on the underside of the car where the threaded bar goes through the floor, but the floor's not flat so that wouldn't work.
Sods law dictated of course that where I wanted to drill was exactly where the fuel lines were!! So had to move them out of the way first. The threaded bar is M6 (same as the rods that come with battery clamp kits) and the nuts are those grippy sealing ones, one one either side of the floor. Seems to work.
There's a nice big bolt hole right next to the battery left from the rear seatbelt mount, which I can use for a good battery earth. However there is a funny directive somewhere in the world that says that all seat and seatbelt mounts are threaded as 7/16 UNF not metric (very very recently manufacturers have moved to metric) so I need an imperial bolt to do that. Of course I sold the seatbelts and the bolts went with them!!
Also worked out I need an aux belt in the region of 1045mm, and realised I hadn't torqued up the crank pulley, so did that too. Small steps!
Neat little install, although I put a bolt on the otherside of the boot as well so the bar is held in place with the battery bar off.
Ah I couldn't tell in the photos. I'll get my coat.

Got some shiny battery terminals from JL Audio, they have IP65 waterproof casings, they accept cables from 8AWG to 0AWG with adaptor sleeves, and they have a stud you can bolt in place to accept a stock wiring terminal as well. Pretty flexible!
Then I stripped and cleaned the alternator. Last time I did this it never went back together again lol, but this time I had the right tools and knew what I was doing. All looks to be in good nick, the diode pack tested out OK but it had some pretty heavy oil deposits in it. I love it how Toyota build their engines so that the place most likely to leak oil is always directly above the alternator.
Then as a final thing for today I stripped and sprayed the alternator and power steering pulleys.
Turns out when I measured the alt belt length as 1042mm I hadn't taken being able to get it over the lip of the pulleys into account! 2nd time lucky with a 1053mm, slips over and tensions like factory. I broke the water pump cover a few weeks ago trying to press the bearing out of it, so I got some JB Weld and glued it back together tonight. Then I mucked about with my new engine mounts which have now turned up from the US. They look to be perfect for the job Quite happy, I might have the motor mounted properly before JAE!
