There's a guy on eBay selling a VVTi lump at the moment. It was on for £500 for ages, he's dropped it to £400 now. Bet he'd take an offer...

Whoops, I forgot about that.

Have a look here, I think this is the guy: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/310370481611

That said, I've re-read the auction and it doesn't come with any ancilliaries so not worth it.

I've updated my site today with a new post: http://www.project-ruze.co.uk/?p=237 but here's the gist of it:

Nothing exciting, to be honest it's too cold to be spending time at the unit at the moment. Just cleaning up the bits I got off the Soarer engine so that I can use them. The engine is 20yrs old so it's seen better days!

Oil pan as it came off. Paint chipped off, scraped and starting to rust:

Degreased and sanded down:

4 coats of Hammerite, it should be pretty tough...:

Gave the upper sump a good seeing to as well, gone from this:

To this:

Getting the burnt oil off is a right pain, just spotted some in the top left that I've missed!! It's too big to go in the parts washer too...

I won't actually be fitting these parts to the VVTi engine for a while, as you have to seal them on with sump sealer (or FIPG if you're using Toyota speak) and if I'm going to replace the oil pump prior to engine installation then I'll have to rip them all off again and re-seal! So they will all get a good coat of WD40 to prevent corrosion and then sealed up and stored.

Christ, that's some good work! I might have to come back to your workshop when I need some bits doing Big Grin If you actually turn up on the same day as the rest of us for this next Bedford meet, I still owe you a beer!

Just joined the forum after Google found this thread.

I'm planning on doing the same conversion but with an earlier engine.

I have a fully working RX7 and a fully working Soarer and I just bought an RX7 without an engine and box which is now going to be the project.

I'm using the W58 box (which I have) and I'm unsure which adaptor to use but I think I might go with the KS Racing version.

After measuring up I think I'm going to need a bonnet bulge and VERY tight ex. manifolds.

you should be able to mount the 1uzfe low enough to not need a bonnet bulge, unless you are planning on supercharging it. I've been reading a lot about gearboxes, W58 should be able to handle a stock 1uz. If you intend on boosting it later, I'd go for an R154. A lot of people on the american v8 forums have been grenading W58 boxes with aggressive shifts, so be careful. They are a bit cheaper than an R154 and a bit lighter too though!

I'm predicting a 3" bonnet bulge at the moment, but I won't know for sure until I've got my engine mounts sorted, I've got a few options there at the moment. Good to have someone else along for the ride! Obviously the older engine has a very different intake manifold which is taller due to the throttle body position
