I have been told by a guy at work who builds minis that it wont work due to the linkage.

Im doing pretty much exactly what your planning to do and i have NO problems. Ask him exactly what he think the problem will be?
If he thinks you can't run gear cables then thats wrong because you can!

Just spoke to him and showed him the pics of your project and he has gone quiet which says it all really. Thanks Demon for your help. Ill have to get you to come over soon and see if it will "fit"

4EFTE gearbox is cable driven from the side so the cables curve around the engine before going to the shifter. I have a contact that can make custom cables, they are so flexible that they can be tied in a knot and still work fine, or so he says.
You will need a MR2 shifter and then the cables are custom made at about a cost of £140 for the two, but will confirm that when i get mine made
If you need the MR2 shifter then let me know as i can get you one this weekend (off my bro's car) while im working on the buggy, if you want to drop by and have a look then your welcome to mate.
If they can fit a 4efte in a mini then i don't see you having too many problems!
