Tried updating mine on the weekend and Kies says mine cannot be updated. Thought it might be the product code, so changed that and it's still the same - do I need to drop back to a 2.1 firmware to upgrade officially?

i didn't :\ i went straight from JP6 mate. Did Kies update when you opened it? try manually forcing kies to update/check for updates without phone connected.

Yeah it did, I let it finish the update before I tried to upgrade the firmware. I'll try it again, if it doesn't work I'll flash my phone with JM8 and then try again.

Seems like Gingerbread (2.3) is imminent on the Nexus One :

http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/10/12/...t=FaceBook

http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/08/open-...ngerbread/

But if it's taken Samsung this long for an official release of Froyo, best not hold your breath for their official Gingerbread.

steviewevie Looks like Samsung have a big press conference next Monday (8th), speculation has been they'll be announcing a Google Nexus Two phone, though that's been denied in the past by both sides (not that the denial means a lot).

Well, it wasn't the Nexus Two at all, it was the Samsung Continuum.

That's a shame, but all the rumours are still stating the nexus two will be samsung so I'll be surprised if it's not (although I was surprised initially that it could be samsung given how involved HTC have been since the birth of android)

And yeah I doubt we'll officially see 2.3 while I still have this handset!

Btw, I dropped back to JM8, still won't upgrade mine, and then manually installed JPO and Kies still says it cannot be upgraded - think I need to work on putting mine back to standard but to a certain extent I don't really care!

Have to admit JPO is unbelievably slick! I thought JPK was smooth, this with the lagfix is getting over 2000 on Quadrant and you can really feel it, scrolling around the screen feels like butter Smile

Only thing I can't get working now is ADB, when I plug my phone in with usb debugging on it still just opens Kies and my PC doesn't recognise it as an Android ADB device as it did before. Not really a huge issue, but I want to put that battery mod back on my phone - is there anything I could be doing wrong?

steviewevie Further to this, and me thinking about the HTC Desire Z, it's emerged that the DZ (and its G2 sibling) have some sort of protection on the internal memory, meaning that it's set to read-only. So right now it can be rooted but you lose that when you reboot (the writes are cached but not saved).

There are a lot of people working on cracking that protection though, and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before it's overcome.

Sorry, I know this is kinda off the original topic of the Galaxy S, but just FYI, looks like the guys working on the Desire Z have *already* cracked the protection and been able to write to internal memory. They just need to now package that all up for regular users, and then permanent root will be easy. Think I will be buying a DZ soon ! Big Grin

That's really fast work! Some of those developers over on XDA are really impressive!

Yep, looking through some of the IRC logs the stuff they do is amazing (they've been collaborating via IRC while doing the work).

They now have a permanent root solution all tried and tested for the G2 (US version of the Desire Z). It's already been proved on the DZ too now.
