Yesterday I came to turn on my Playstation 3 that I purchased 3 years ago from Play.com. The system came on, an orange light flashed, then the console turns off. I cant get my disk out and the console is just a nice looking brick. There is a fix, but I dont have the tools.

However, after some searching I came across a "Sales Of Good Act" which states : For the purposes of this Act, the quality of goods includes their state and condition and the following (among others) are in appropriate cases aspects of the quality of goods : :

(a) fit for purpose,
(b) appearance and finish,
© freedom from minor defects,
(d) safety and
(e) durability (The item should last a reasonable time without fault).

Now, you can use this act upto 6 years from purchasing the product and can use it on many broken items.

There is a guy here http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/P...-p/9976820 who managed to get a new, free, ps3 sent to him under this act. Im currently trying to do the same with play.com and will see how it goes.

What you should do if replace it if that what you were planning

let the case go on and if you get new one just sell it then?

Yep. I dont have a heat gun though, and dont beleive Ide be able to take it all apart etc. However that is a last choice. If i cant get it replaced ill try that, as i dont want to void the warranty before anything else.

Although, ive heart fixing the YLOD by heating the 2 central cores is the only way, but doesnt 100% of the time work... :/

i have a 60gb ps3 thats backward compatible so i have a little box on the side of my ps3 with 3 switches on it. this controls the disc in/out sensor and the other on has 2x1.5v aa batterys conected to the motor for the disc eject unit so i can insert and eject a disc with out the unit restarting. the 3rd one is just a manual over ride. i run swap magic on it and can play ps1 and ps2 back up's of my games. i opened mine up and stripped it down and changed the heat paste with pc grade paste. also run a fan cooling system under it

^^ you have way to much time and far to many skills...........lol

a few points to note Jambo

1 - (2)Where the seller sells goods in the course of a business, there is an implied term that the goods supplied under the contract are of satisfactory quality.

2 - )For the purposes of subsection (1)(b) above goods which do not conform to the contract of sale at any time within the period of six months starting with the date on which the goods were delivered to the buyer must be taken not to have so conformed at that date.

3 - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1979/54

Overall mate the act doesnt cover you for 6 years (i cant find it) and it doesnt really cover you for any of the warranty issues, breakages or anything

it merely conforms that the goods must be of working order when purchased and received.

it goes through the legality of returning items you dont want after purchase, if a retailer wont honour the warranty etc etc

dont forget in 1979 they didnt have sophisticated kit like PS3's

the act is to protect buyers and sellers during the sale of goods and to a point to the end of the warranty as supplied by the seller.

Personally i dont htink it will hold up, and if that other guy truely did get it sorted and hasnt posted for internet kudo's, he was dealing with a pretty un-educated persons

by rights, a seller doesnt even have to offer a warranty if they dont want to, thats why you always see wildly varying time scales from 7 days to 12 months, they only change them dependant on their competitors and looking good.

if this act did indeed cover you for "6 years" then technically every person in the UK could get free fixes or replacements on a item for 6 years,

thus bankrupting every company that trades in the uk, no-body will ever by new over this period because of the Act, and foreign companies would withdraw from the UK market

You've had it three years, nothing lasts forever, get over it Smile

PS: (if the act did cover us for 6 years, and it was a viable option for us and the consumer, i would like that also Wink especially as everything i have breaks one day after the warranty finishes)
