yes mate. the thing is is it aint broke yet now is the time to take it apart. change the paste and clean it. i hav a laptop fan unit that i modded so it was flat and have that under the ps3 to take away the heat. also give it a good blow out with the ps3 onboard system. hold down the eject button till the cooling fan comes on for a minute. the heat trick does work but no one knows for how long the unit will last. after my ps3 was 1 year old i opened it to replace the paste. it's one of the first ones to come out and is still going strong. it gets used for 1 to 3 hours a day and party times it's 3 to 6 hours.you might want to check out the bbc to see if they are going to fight sony on this and join in with them if thats the case
and now i use ftp smart to move over games to my ps3 it's on for 5 hours a day
All the heat trick does is melt the solder then lets it re-set, i wonder if another way was to actually apply more solder, or is it impossible that way by hand?
Ill have a go if I dont get anywhere with play.com . Do i need 4 Screwdrivers, Thermal Paste for a PC, and a heat gun?
Not by hand, I would think its surface mounted and they are tricky even with the correct tools.
The Heat will be attempting to remove something called a dry joint, these are basically where the solder hasn't flowed correctly onto the component and the copper track, sometimes a tiny bit of flux gets in the way. However these should be weeded out during soak testing at the factory. The heat will be heating up the solder flux so it boils and evaporates leaving the solder room to move back into place and complete the circuit.
yes mate. even a few youtube video's on how to open it. how to fix it, there is also a pdf on how to service it floating around. might be worth looking into a fan switch aswell. overide the fan and have it on all the time to help keep it cool
Jambo Taken from the 2nd Link on the BBC "If your goods are faulty after 6 Months"
This legislation also states that the seller, not the manufacturer, is legally obliged to sort out a problem if the goods do not meet these requirements.
The law also says I have six years from the date of purchase to claim damages for faulty goods.

edeath Well I'm getting an XBOX 360 manufactured in 2006 repaired free of charge by MS for RROD. Stupid thing is I assumed it was only 3 years and bought a replacement. I thought I'd check the MS site on a whim and low and behold free repair 4 years on!

Xbox 360 consoles have a two-year manufacturer warranty in all EMEA countries except the following countries, which have a one-year warranty for consoles and accessories:
Countries with a one-year warranty:
The United Kingdom (this includes Northern Ireland)
South Africa

...
Q2: My console has three flashing red lights or an E74 error. Is this covered by warranty?
A2: The warranty period for three flashing red lights and the E74 error is three years from the original purchase date of the console. If your console is out of the three year warranty period, you can still receive console repair service from Microsoft, but you will be charged a fee.
