Sales Of Good Act of 1979
Yerh I know that stevie, and the only way usually is an engineers report, but that simply means taking it to a computer store locally, asking them to look into the problem, finding the information out for themself & then saying that I personally haven't altered or affected the system & that it came with the fault that has finally developed into the console failing to turn on.
well to all those who dont have a yellow ring of death and your consol is over the 1 year mark it's time to open it up and fix it before it has the yellow ring of death.... it's a sign. if you dont yours could be next. cost a few pounds for some paste and a couple of hours of your time.
may do mine this weekend, got thermal paste already, used it in a laptop that kept over heating, so put some inbetween processor and heatsink?
The good stuff is Arctic Silver I believe, about £5 for the tube, not too bad if you get the paste right first time .
Jay, do you believe that this method should work for my YLOD, and if I apply the thermal paste correctly and assemble and disassemble correctly it could last quite a bit longer?

yes mate. 95% work after it. but cooling is whats going to make it last longer. go get your self a cooling unit for it and use it all the time your running your machine. also there is one guy that heats up the whole board not just the chips and he has his running for much longer than normal. 3 months min on that without a fan.
Ah cool. If it works Ill be happy. Will check the status on Play.com tomorrow, try and haggle them, then turn to the DIY route if it fails.
thanks
James
no worries. if that fails you can get a new board for it. might be cheaper than a new ps3. i know a company over here that does a full repair with 1 years guarantee for less than 100 pounds. might be worth finding one around your way that does a propper job. not just heat it up and run with your money
Marsdendean It's pathetic really, because when cars (yes i know they pose a greater danger) have recalls things are fixed for free.
Why can't games console makers either send a new "modified" version, or give a discount off another new one?>

Sony don't, BUT....
Play.com didnt reply within 4 days, and after contacting them twice over the phone (tuesday and today) i have got a result. After a 10minute call on the phone, once the guy had spoken to the correct department, I was told to obtain an engineers report, e-mail them it and they will then replace my console under the sales of good act.
The report will probably cost me around £15, but thats small compared to £131 Sony offered, I will also get a brand new console, not a re-con
