A lot of people seem to be talking about the Lexus 1UZ V8 engine recently, so I thought it was time to finally put fingers to keys and show you lot some photos.

A while ago I figured that you could buy a MKIV LS400 (1998-2000) for about a grand, break it for parts, and keep the engine and break even.* Tempted by the thoughts of a free 4.0 V8 I went looking. You can pick up the earlier LS400 with the non-vvti engine much cheaper, but I wanted the best! The later engine makes better economy, more power, more torque, has a better designed intake manifold and better engine management (i.e. it has integral crank and cam position sensors, no distributors as it's all coil-on-plug etc) which lends itself to aftermarket engine management.

*Bear in mind this was 18 months ago! :lol:

After a month or so of scouring eBay, Driftworks, PH and Autotrader, I found this beauty:

I got outbid on eBay but won it with a 2nd chance offer. I didn't even bother going to see it as the guy only wanted a grand for it including delivery to my workshop, and I couldn't have cared less what condition it was in.

A few days later and I had the car in my posession. It really wasn't in a good state. You may have noticed a missing indicator in the photos above. In reality, the entire inner wing had been beaten back into shape following a huge impact - the track rod end on that side had a huge bend in it, most of the wiring connectors are broken, the wing was knackered, etc. It also (rather worryingly) sits perfectly level on 3 axle stands! Probably for the best that it will never go back on the road.

I started stripping parts off it and flogging them on eBay, the dark side, and here! It was a slow process - LS's don't seem to break very much so people don't seem to buy 2nd hand bits for them! Plus having only been made for 2 years it's not a common model.

So now the car looked like this (I actually only took this photo to scare Jim):

Then it stalled for a while. First the MR2 broke quite significantly, then I spent a few months paying for that, then I went on holiday a bit, then the MR2 broke again (the Belgium incident), then I sold it, then the Fiesta broke and I'm still in the process of fixing that.

However, last week I picked up new toys:

I thought about renting them but to be honest by the time I've done this and Dan's engine swap it will have been cheaper this way!

I think the car still owes me about £150, but that's cheap in my eyes for the engine, gearbox bellhousing, wiring loom, ECU, all anciliaries etc etc. A bare VVTi 1UZ can set you back around £500.

So, onto the important bit. 3968cc, quad cam, 32 valves and 8 forged pistons with a compression ratio of 10.5:1 producing 290bhp and 300ftlb of torque. In reality that's strangled by design, sacrificing power for smoothness and economy (hence -FE not -GE). But we can get around that Smile

These photos were taken before the engine was sat around for a year. Upon my return this weekend, it looked like this:

Because big chunks of the engine are aluminium and it's been stored in a damp place, a lot of it's showing a coating of aluminium oxide. This just brushes off though, nothing to be worried about.

Easy things first, get the ECU out. Engine loom has to be disconnected from it anyway

Many pins! No idea what these do, but I've got the wiring diagram on order from Lexus.

Main engine harness freed up. There is some secondary wiring for the engine on the main car loom which will have to come out too (generally anything on the bottom half of the engine, alternator, power steering, air con, oil level/pressure switches etc are on the car loom).

Next step, drain the coolant and oil. Like usual on Toyotas, there's a nice tap at the bottom of the radiator.

This is the coolant filler point, on the throttle body (of course?!).

There are some other bolts you have to undo to completely drain the block, I don't have photos of those.

Next step, remove the viscous fan AND PUT IT IN THE BIN.

Undo the 4 bolts on the water pump pulley:

Take off aux belt by releasing tensioner (put socket on it and turn it like you're trying to undo it).

The recommended way of taking the engine out is to remove the power steering and air conditioning pumps in situ, as these have got hard pipes attached to them with fluid/gas in. In the case of the P/S, the reservior is also in the way!

Power steering pump removed:

This is how it was attached. 1 nut from the front, 2 bolts in from the side, then it slides off forwards:

Why 'Indecisive'? Pretty simple... I can't decide what to put it in. I have an idea in my head but I don't know if it will work because no one's done it before (as far as I know). And no, it's not going in the Fiesta.

I have a few options if my #1 plan doesn't come off. They go nicely in old Celicas, MKIV Supras and I believe even in the MX5. There's one in an AE86 and there's even someone fitting one in an MR2 Smile They're braver than me though.
