Currently I am on 225/45/17 at the front and 245/45/17 rears, is it ok to have the 225/45/17 for the rears too as my winter tyres. If its ok would it have any impact on the handling?

You're right. Summer tyres get rock hard in the cold. Winter tyres have a much softer rubber mixture which means better performance when it's cold. It also means they get worn quicker, that's why want to swap back to summer tyres when the weather gets warmer.

The wider tyres you've got the bigger the risk of hydroplaning on wet roads and snow. Rally drivers use super narrow tyres to be able to cut through the mud, snow and water rather than hydroplaning on top of it.

My winter tyres are 205/55 R16. I know 16" rims look silly on an IS, but they give you a larger profile which gives you a little extra suspension. Stiff suspension isn't ideal when the roads are slippery.

225 all round is better. i say get the best you can aford, with winter tyres ever little helps, i'm running conti cvc5 225/40/18 and putting out a lot more bhp now and drive the car every winter and for 3 years i've not fell off the road or got stuck

I would say they are all too wide! I am looking at winter tyres (as mentioned above) and 215/45/17 all round, as this is the stock tyres size. As Jay says, you want as thin as possible in the wet/ice/snow. I am kinda considering running a slight stretch on 195/50/17, to get even narrower.

On a side note, I would run 245/40/17 rears to match 225/45/17 on the front (in summer, this is) as they would be less difference in overall rolling circumference than with the 245/45/17 you state above.

What would you say Jay? You're the tyre man!

EDIT: Just noticed you have a 250, not a 200 (I just woke up!) and so would be staggered from stock. My comments above may only be half relevant to you! (But I won't edit them out as may be relevant to IS200 drivers reading.) Jay's previous advice of 225/45/17 all round may be the best option for you afterall!

I would say they are all too wide! I am looking at winter tyres (as mentioned above) and 215/45/17 all round, as this is the stock tyres size. As Jay says, you want as thin as possible in the wet/ice/snow. I am kinda considering running a slight stretch on 195/50/17, to get even narrower.

Thanks Jay/Stoney, never knew before this that you could use 225 all around thought you had to stick to what was there i.e 245. Was thinking of fitting nankangs but decided against it probably get a premium part worn tyres instead.

I think 225 all round would be the best. I have 225 tyres fitted to 8.5 rims in my living room! It is a very slight stretch, but fit fine, and I'd say better for winter.

Strange though, that they fit a 245/45 rear as standard, when a 255/40 would give a wider tyre and closer match to the 225/45 on the front! Maybe they wanted to maintain the 45% sidewall for ride comfort?

No reason why not. If the rears are 8.5" wide that is about the idea width IMO and the overall size of the tyre will be closer to that on the front.

No reason why not. If the rears are 8.5" wide that is about the idea width IMO and the overall size of the tyre will be closer to that on the front.
