DIY: The Skyline mod (a.k.a. Fog to tail light conversion)
DIY: The Skyline mod (a.k.a. Fog to tail light conversion)
I just realized there are a few guides already, but this is a slightly different way of doing it.
This mod can be split in to three different stages, depending on how much work you want to put into it.
Stage 1: Your fog lights light up along with your brake lights. This is super easy to do, but you lose the ability to turn on the fog lights with the fog light switch.
Stage 2: Same as stage 1, but using two diodes you maintain the fog light functionality.
Stage 3: Turn your fog lights into extra tail lights, as well as being able to turn on the fog lights using the switch on the dashboard.
This guide will show you how to accomplish stage 3. This is the end result:

If you look at the wiring diagram you can see that the feed to the fog lights splits up at a junction connector called J14. Therefore it is fitting to make the connections at or before this JC.
The tail lights are connectred the same way, but at a JC called J15. Presumably J14 and J15 should be located near eachother.
This drawing confirms that
To be able to reach the connectors you need to remove the rear seats. I'll make a guide on how to do that as well.
It doesn't really matter which one of these green-white wires you use, but the one the arrow points at is the one coming from the brake light switch.
Cut and peel the orange-green wire. The green-white wire doens't need to be cut, only peeled.
Now you need two diodes if you're aiming for stage 2 or 3. I used 6A40 diodes, which means max. 6A and 400V.
Solder the diodes and wires together like this.
Insulate the connections to avoid shorts.
Now it's time to deal with the fog lights. You'll need two 5/21W bulbs. They are the same as the ones for your tail lights.
You also need two bulb holders. They can be bought here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.d...169wt_1012
The bulb holders need some cutting to fit into the fog light housings. Luckily they are made from a plastic that is easily modified using a sharp knife.
Remove the connectors from your old bulb holders and connect them you your new ones like this. As you can see there is one wire left over, the black-red one.
Connect the lights and make sure they light up when you press the brake pedal.
Splice the black-red wire and connect it to the green-black wire going to the license plate light.
Insulate and reconnect. Make sure your new tail lights light up along with the other ones and that they become brighter when you press the brake pedal. If everything does what it's supposed to you can refit the rear seat.
Congratulations! You've now finished the stage 3 Skyline mod. That sounds a little bit more fancy than it is, doesn't it? You can also call it the fog to tail light conversion
+rep for an excellent guide. Get some more shots of your car from behind at dusk please
Excellent write up.
Slightly different way of doing the fog mod (ie behind the seat not on the boot arm)
Superb write up Patrik
+rep just for the amount of time its taken to write it all up and for your Sub position
As stav said its a different way to do it but the more guides the better

Great write up Patrik.
I have been thinking about converting my fog to brake mod to the fog to tail mod! Just love that Skyline look at night.
