reco2k I looked into this and the fully laden 13b (with the rats nest) only weighs slightly less than the 1uz because of its alluminium block it is an extremely light engine, the 1uz when coupled with an r154 gearbox weighs 220kg and the 13b with gearbox is 186kg not a huge amount in it and if you change the inlet manifold and a few other bits that sheds a lot of weight

Ross

Yeah but it's enough to let John go to Nandos for lunch a couple extra times

IS200 Sport - Sold
Mazda 6 MPS - Zoom Zoom!

Modifications
Completed:

Currently 280bhp/295lbft; 3" Meercat custom exhaust; KW Suspension; FMIC; SSP; HPFP; Custom Stainless Steel Dials - for the moment, the only set in the world!! (Till the group buy for MPSOC anyway  )

In Progress:

E-Tuning remap ongoing via Cobb Accessport; Braided brake lines; Stubby aerial; Tinted repeaters and sidelights; 3 Port Boost Control Solenoid; 3" HTP Intake

Right had a little more time to muck about today. Checked all the valve clearances and all are well within tolerance which is good! Found some rubbish bits, one of the cam covers wasn't done up too tight so there's some corrosion just inside where it should all be nice and clean. Checked out all the coils and they are all crack free and look in great condition. Unfortunately one of the cam cover bolts snapped off so I guess I'll have to drill and tap that at some point before the engine's fired up again. Not sure quite how I'm gonna do that without getting swarf into the head but I'll figure something out.

Anyhow some photos for you:

Head with everything disconnected:

Cam cover off:

Those of you who've been looking into the 1UZ will notice that the big gears that drive the exhaust cam aren't in the middle of the cam. They are moved for the VVTi into the housing at the front of the engine. The cam position sensor (required for VVTi operation) is in the centre of the cam instead.

The gears are here. Unlike most DOHC engines, only the intake came is driven by the timing belt. The exhaust cam is then driven off that:

I fired up our parts washer for the first time today. I've put the timing belt covers in it to make sure I've got the mixture of the solvent cleaner right first before the cam covers go in.

Either that has done a LOT of miles or the oil wasn't changed very often.

2nd one. The stuff that came out of the sump was like tar.

The other side was cleaner, but that's the side where the cam cover wasn't sealed, so it would've had a small amount of condensation getting into it.

Mine looked the same as that on the left bank but the right was worse than that (laid on it's side in the scrap yard!) Hence why I have stripped mine down and cleaned it all, are you going to be cleaning it up at all before running it?

Yes but not much. I'm still intending to just service it and drop it into the car to start with, and strip & rebuild at a later date.

More deliveries this week.

What's in the box?!

Bits of black metal!

Top bit is the gearbox brace / rear mount. The bits all round the edge are the custom subframe to replace the existing RX7 one. The lower arms and steering rack mount to this but it has the engine mounts in different places to accommodate a Toyota engine. The bits in the middle are the engine mounts & brackets.

Aluminium driveshaft with a Mazda diff end and a Toyota manual gearbox end! It comes balanced as you would hope, and it's pretty light. The kit normally includes a steel one, aluminium is an optional upgrade. The other bit is the transmission brace which replaces the powerplant frame, to brace the diff and the gearbox together.

I had a bit of time to kill last night so continued cleaning up parts. This time it was the turn of the ignition coils.

Before:

After:

They had better not fail, at £100 a pop!
