My Indecisive 4.0 V8 1UZ-FE Project

Ordered 2 Soarer engine mount brackets today. Will see if they line up (they should do, the Soarer uses the same subframe for the 1UZ and 1JZ so in theory the engine mount points will be closer together) and if not Toyota will let me return them for no charge

The mounts look smaller in the parts catalogue but you can't rely on the diagrams from that really, they still use the 94 engine diagrams for a lot of the 97 stuff.

Their usual terms are 10% restocking fee, if returned within 14 days. But as usual with these things, it's not what you know...

Are OEM Toyota bits really better than decent aftermarket ones ?
(generally the manufacturers don't make their own parts, they just buy them in)

Not really. A *new* engine is a lot more, and any second hand one would need servicing anyway, and for that money would likely come with little or no service history. Given the state of the rest of the LS400 I don't think it was well looked after, so it definitely needs it. Also that's what the parts retail at, not what I paid
If I could have afforded it I'd have bought the engine new. I'm not trying to do this to a budget, I'm trying to do it right. Those service parts were less than a tenth of what the project will end up costing as a whole.

Yes and no. I used to use blueprint parts on my MR2 until they sent me a thermostat that never opened and a distributor cap that lasted 2000 miles. There aren't too many other pattern manufacturers for these engines (it's not like you can just pop down Eurocarparts). Also, a lot of the pattern parts will work just fine on the vehicle that they are designed for, but the stresses change when you start upgrading / using components from a different vehicle. An example of this is the popular Camry V6 engine swap in to the MR2. A very well known pattern manufacturers water pump has a differently designed impellor. This is fine when installed in the Camry but when it has 10 extra litres of water to move about it's not up to the job - the Toyota one is. Often if you compare the designs of things like the impellors on water pumps, the castings on plastic parts etc to the OE parts the differences are obvious.
As a result of the above, I try to use OE parts wherever possible. For other things like the spark plugs (Denso equivalent of IK20) they're cheaper than buying them anywhere else!

I meant it might be cheaper to run this one till it blows then stick a replacement V8 in.
That would make sense if the engine were staying standard. This one (most likely) won't be. Depends how much I like it once it's all together and on the road.
