I expect most of you (that would buy an untaxed car) know this already but...

I bought my RX7 at the start of the year, which had no tax or MOT. 2 months ago I got a fine from the DVLA for not declaring it SORN. Fair enough I thought, the original SORN must have expired and I missed the reminder (or it got sent to the wrong address during the registered keeper change).

I just did a vehicle enquiry on my Nissan which I bought with no tax and MOT at the start of the month. I checked it before I bought it, and it said the date of liability was Jan 2013 (it failed its MOT in Jan 2012, so that makes sense). However I found:

Date of Liability 01 08 2012
Vehicle Status Unlicensed with Keeper Change

So, when you change the registered keeper of a vehicle, it invalidates any previously declared SORN, and you must redeclare. I didn't know that :o

I did........

Also:

You can only SORN a vehicle at the post office with the tax reminder letter now - not by post or with the V5c. Silly dvla closing the loop holes.

I shun on line dealings with DVLA - better to support local business's and Post Offices then line DVLA's pockets.
