My Indecisive 4.0 V8 1UZ-FE Project
Got back to the cam covers today. They've been left stripped for a while so they weren't in a great state. This was the one that when I last saw it, was ready for paint:
As you can see it's corroded again. So, wire brush time...
And washed clean (sort of)
Then it was time to take the spark plug seals out. I didn't want to do this as it's fairly destructive but they were absolutely filled up with **** from the many rounds of paint stripper and I have 8 new ones in the engine gasket set.
Another wash over and then drying
I then had one last attempt at applying paint stripper to the other cam cover, and turned my attention to the diff.
I've got new seals on the way for the diff, but unfortunately they've not turned up yet. I decided to remove the old ones anyway, and check that it was actually an LSD. Coming from a Toyota background, it seems odd for me that an auto would have an LSD, but I'd been told this one was. Best to make sure...
Seals came out fairly easily, much easier than the MR2
Quick wipe down showed everything to be in good nick, but I still wasn't sure.
Best take the back end off the diff I suppose
Jackpot. Gears all in good nick too
Cleaned the diff cover up. Look Toyota, oil baffles that unbolt!! Take note!!
Cleaned up the mating surface on the diff housing as well, as it will need RTF sealant on it when it goes back together
Then I got my masking tape on!
And anyone who's been following this thread and knows about my obsession with hammerite will know what's coming next...
Nice little update mate, bt still lots of cleaning, no actual building lol
Clearly an LSD - nice.
So 'later' is taking longer than I thought but should have some more for you tonight. In the mean time, got my injectors back from injectortune. Through cleaning I have apparently gained 54cc/min... lowest injector was 246cc when they're meant to be 255. All new o-rings and filters fitted too, and I have a spare set incase I lose any as the engine gasket set includes them.
Managed to get the diff off the car tonight with some help from Dan. Some more paint went on things and then eventually we worked out how to get the driveshafts far enough apart to take the diff off without dropping the whole subframe. I dropped it on my little finger a bit which was unfortunate but never mind! Next step is to pop the top off to make sure it is just a stock diff and not anything special. I don't expect it to be anything other than stock but it's worth checking as the car did have some nice bits on it from Japan.
