Does having the sport models LSD help in the snow? My car is next to useless in the snow and would like to sort it out. Is it worth getting a sport diff fitted?

As above winter tyres is all you need, or get some snow socks.

It's not the car's fault, it's like trying to walk on snow in leather soled dress shoes.

Yes, the LSD helps. Without it all power is transferred to the wheel with the least traction, which means one of your wheels will spin if you get stuck, the other wheel will do nothing at all. An LSD prevents this from happening.

The Torsen won't help though will it? As its a torque multiplier and if one wheels got no grip so zero torque, zero times anything is still zero.

Though I have read if that happens, put the handbrake on a bit, creates torque in the spinning wheel so sends power to the other.

You are absolutely right Smile

Quote:The Torsen (from Torque Sensing) works as an open differential when the amount of torque going to each wheel is equal. As soon as one wheel starts to lose traction, the difference in torque causes the gears in the Torsen differential to bind together. The design of the gears in the differential determines the torque bias ratio. For instance, if a particular Torsen differential is designed with a 5:1 bias ratio, it is capable of applying up to five times more torque to the wheel that has good traction.

These devices are often used in high-performance all-wheel-drive vehicles. Like the viscous coupling, they are often used to transfer power between the front and rear wheels. In this application, the Torsen is superior to the viscous coupling because it transfers torque to the stable wheels before the actual slipping occurs.

However, if one set of wheels loses traction completely, the Torsen differential will be unable to supply any torque to the other set of wheels. The bias ratio determines how much torque can be transferred, and five times zero is zero.

It won't help you if you get stuck, but under acceleration it should help, right?

Yep should help keep you going but makes the back end twitchy cause the power can be shifting from side to side.
