My Indecisive 4.0 V8 1UZ-FE Project
This was today:
Mazda prop uses a 'staked' type UJ fitting. This is non-removable:
So I cut it off:
This took ****** ages and 7 dremel cutting discs... was too tight to get a grinder in without risking damaging the UJ which at this stage I thought I might still use. Also when I first tapped it out the needle bearing exploded all over the place. We never did find all the rollers so I had to take the other end of the prop apart to use the bearing from that end, so I did all this twice.
The tech2 prop uses circlips so much easier to work with!
So circlips removed and UJ hammered out:
I was proper nervous about this - the aluminium prop is an expensive upgrade on the kit and I didn't want to damage it! So hammering the UJ out was a nervewracking moment.
So now I have this:
The larger of the 2 UJs on the right is the tech2 one. The smaller Mazda UJ on the left won't fit in the prop as it's too small, and I can't remove the diff flange from the UJ as it is also staked. The tech2 UJ won't fit on the auto diff flange as it's too big... so the solution I think is to send the auto diff flange with the Mazda UJ attached to a machine shop and get the staked-in UJ drilled out and the holes enlarged to take the tech2 UJ. Then it can have the larger newer UJ pressed into it and I can reassemble the prop.

Nothing's ever simple mate!
While I've been doing that I've ordered some more bits and pieces too. There's a specific battery that fits in the rear bins (sort of, more on that soon) and still has the required umph to start a rotary with a sound system, so it should cope with starting the V8 (which doesn't have as high a starter requirement as you might think). It's a Westco battery that's meant as a replacement for the factory unit in the MX5. It's sealed so safe for use in the cabin and it's an AGM battery which is like one step down from a full gel battery (which are expensive). I've bought that a bit in advance so I can sort out mounting and wiring in the bins. I bought a CTEK battery charger too, which is a trickle charger and also does battery conditioning etc.
ive just bought myself an odessey battery to run the car off, snapped up a bargain off ebay bit enough to run the car.
Yeah that's my backup battery just a small one.
This is a bigger one more like a proper car battery.
Ah right, is it a 51R size one? I looked at those but they're all a bit expensive and some of them are too tall! This one is a Westco 12V31M. Now I've got it and opened the box it's got breather/ventiliation tubes on the top! Grr. You would think I would have stopped believing stuff that's written on the internet by now. Oh well, there is a plug in the floor near where the battery is going so I'll just run some vacuum tubing down to that.
