Pulled the interior to bits today. Annoyingly most of the plastics around the dashboard and centre console are pretty much broken, mostly around the screw fixings. It gives me a reason to replace them all with the updated 99+ plastics but it's not great! I was also screwing about the odometer readout not working, as I'd been told it wouldn't work without keeping the original ECU and in the process I realised my car didn't have it. However I've since found out that's just because it's missing the engine harness, and the cluster earths through the engine loom. So I'll make some earths up for that harness and hopefully that will all work nicely.

Got the wiring connectors for the gearbox today.

VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor):

1 x 90980-11143
3 x 82998-12440

Reverse (Back-Up) Switch:

Now in the image I have the wrong part numbers for the pins, the correct part numbers are

1 x 90980-10496
2 x 82998-12270

For the sake of search engines (as I couldn't find this info anywhere) this is for Chaser or Soarer R154 reverse switch 84210-35030 connector

As well as sorting out the engine swap and associated electronics, I'm also updating the look of the car. The car is a '93 and looks a bit dated - it's easily updated by adding facelifted parts from later spec cars. I think I've sourced a later spec interior through a contact, and I already got the later spec rear lights. Today these arrived:

I figure I've got loads of time to sort out the look of the car so I am just picking the bits and pieces up as and when they pop up cheap. Took a punt on these as I wasn't sure if they were eBay knock offs and they were coming from Ireland, but they are genuine Mazda ones (made by Stanley, the parent company of Raybrig), in perfect condition!

This all came out today, along with 2 big cardboard boxes full of broken trim:

Leaving the rex looking like this:

All to get to this ****** wiring connector, which has some very important wires in it!

There's a ground in here the instrument cluster uses (it grounds to the engine so it and all the senders share the same ground) and the wiring that goes to the gearbox is there too.

Found this site this morning... although the wiring info is for an LSx engine it's so clear what everything does and ties up with all the wiring diagrams and the physical wire colours I've found!

I assume the wiring did not run anywhere else to get to it then? are you putting it all back or just a minimal amount?

Always good when youve a manual to work to so you can work backwards and understand what your playing with,

I've got a wiring manual but as usual in these cases it's from the US market. That said the wiring colours all add up so far, it's just the dashboard stuff is the other way around.

It's a bit complex as the car as a lot of harnesses. The dash harness comes out with the dash, it has 4 big multi-connectors (2 at either end of the dash). Then the engine has an engine loom (which I don't have) and an emissions harness (which I don't have). I couldn't get to any of the wiring for that particular plug as it's all behind all the heater / aircon stuff right up against the firewall.

So tracing wires from the instrument cluster goes through 3 wiring looms (and 3 changes of wire colours) and without getting to the connectors you can't verify the change in wire colour.

As much as I love RX7s, I really don't like the pre '99 model front. I much prefer the front that you're putting on, John.
