You can get ring insurance for about £250 for touristfahrten, I've been looking into it recently. With stories like this, you'd be stupid not to.

While that does look scary, if I saw a horrific crash at the side of the motorway, it wouldn't put me off going on motorways. So it doesn't put me off going to the 'Ring.

I haven't been there yet, but I'd still love to go. I'm sure that as long as you don't get carried away, and drive within your capabilities and the conditions, then everything will be fine.

I didn't actually mean that I'm worried about having a horrific crash, because I'm not. Exactly as you say, if you just drive without pushing the limits, I doubt you'll have a crash like that.

My problem is that you could easily be that Mini driver who was quietly minding his/her own business and got clobbered purely for being unsighted........obviously the risk is relatively low, but there's still a risk.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to do the Ring at some point, but probably prefer to do it in a rented car rather than my own

The thing is though you are on a race track not a road and you must constantly look in your mirrors and move over to the right.
If you dont you can sometimes be to blame

I would not use my car for the Ring as I trust my driving but not someone who get on a track and thinks they are Lewis Hamilton .
Not sure about using a rental car on a race track as you would not be covered, but i understand your point Parthiban.

I would be happy to watch other should they wish to drive there cars around the ring

I know what you mean, but you could say that about the motorway too. You could be the guy driving quite sensibly when someone falls asleep at the wheel and crashes into you, or someone is looking at their mobile phone and causes an accident right in front of you, etc, etc.

As Stav says though, you do need to be aware of faster-moving traffic behind you at the 'Ring, much more so than on the road.

Yep you're all absolutely right, that you need to keep your wits about you at all times, but I think the description (however accurate) said that he came over a blind crest and didn't know the mini was there - so even if the mini was keeping right, the bmw didn't expect it to be there and may have used more road than he should have........

I don't think the motorway is quite the same - it's a far more sanitised environment, the speeds are lower (and more importantly the speed differential) and it's much easier to avoid an impact if you keep an eye on your mirrors as visibility is much better (no blind crests, so blind corners.....)

Glad I'm not the only one, but aren't there companies that have cars you can hire for the Ring? Or is that only to be a passenger?
