There was just the most horrendous crash this morning about 100m from my front door............there was the loudest noise I've heard in a while, ran outside to see what it was and it was not a pretty sight. No pictures obviously out of respect, but basically it seems a VW Sharan (minicab) was trying to overtake a parked car, misjudged how much room he had and ended up going almost head on into a truck coming the other way.

He was conscious when I got there, and there were a few other neighbours about trying to keep him awake. The paramedics arrived surprisingly quickly to be honest, was literally only about 5 mins before they arrived, and fire engines about 5-10mins later. The only people who didn't do a great job were the police, they took ages to arrive, and then didn't even divert traffic very well!

It's amazing even with all the pneumatic gear, it still took an awful long time to cut the car apart and get him out. When I had been up close before the emergency services arrived, you couldn't see anything below the guys waist as the dash intrusion was so bad, but it seemed all the airbags had done their job as his upper body didn't look injured at all (externally anyway)

I left the scene after they got him out and were taking him to the air ambulance............. I hope he makes it through........

Really going to have to get in touch with the council about this, we've always complained that people shouldn't be allowed to park on that part of the road as it simply isn't wide enough for that - i'm sure they'll think that a speed camera is the solution but it really isn't, if there was no parked car there even if they were both doing 100mph they wouldn't have crashed.

Was a bit of a shock when I first walked round the truck and saw the state of the car, wasn't expecting it to be quite as bad as it was.........although the fact that a hole had been ripped through the truck it was clear that it was a pretty heavy impact.

Just saw the truck getting towed away, now that was some tow truck!

Sadly the signs I was dreading went up yesterday saying "fatal collision"......feel awful for his family, and also the truck driver who I think was quite innocent in this. You can still see his skid marks and also the tracks through the grass verge as he's clearly tried to get off the road but couldn't do enough to avoid it......poor guy will have to live with this.

Yep that tow truck was massive, didn't actually see them put it on, but there was another massive tow truck there too so not sure if one lifted the truck onto the other - not surprised they cost £200k though, they were both from the US.

Condolances to the poor guy and his family.

Quote:It's amazing even with all the pneumatic gear, it still took an awful long time to cut the car apart and get him out.

This is different for every incident as you can imagine, and we normally do as requested by the Paramedics, although there are standard procedures for roof removal, roof folds, doors, etc. However alot depends on the injuries sustained and if there is any limbs impaled/body injuries/feet trapped under pedals/ or as stated here maybe dash intrusion. Then it is up to the fire crews how they go about extrication. However I assure you that they would have worked as quickly as possible, we aim to free a casualty within the first 20 minutes. This way they should be in hospital and being treated within the golden hour. However, there are always the occasional bad accidents that no matter how fast you work you come up against more problems, or need to stop to to allow the casuality to be stabilised again.

The body is an amazing thing, initially in the early minutes it will compensate for an injuries, for example pulling blood from the extremities (legs, arms, fingers, toes) and feed it to the vital organs. The problem is that after a short while vitals will start to drop (normally within the 20 mins mark) and this is when they need hospitalisation.

Hopefully most of us will never be in a situation like this, but I just wanted to reassure you guys that the emergency services are there for you and will do their utmost should they be needed.

Sorry didn't mean that to sound as though I was criticising, it was the opposite in fact. Just never seen it done before and I was surprised at how long it takes due to the care required to do it properly. Especially with all the dash intrusion, they would have had to be really careful with separating that away from his body.

Have to say the fire service and the paramedics did a fantastic job that day, they were on the scene surprisingly quick (first paramedic was there in minutes) - the police on the other hand were awful.......all they really needed to do was divert the flow of traffic and they made a right hash of it.

i think when we watch it on tv, most of it is cutted out, so we assume it was quick, cut and out, but in real life it can take hours and hours

Sounds like a terrible case.

Like Cous said the cuttin gear is awesome. we practice with it at work incase there was an incident on the station, but practice on cars, its amazing what they can do.

however the problem with the body is its so fragile inside,
the guy who teaches us on these causes explained, the hearts just hanging, and if its jolted hard enough then it rips the main artery, you could get up wander around for a few minutes then, puff, gone just like that and not even realise.
