Following on from my last thread, after having been offered quite a sweet deal I was feeling good and also with VF being quite convincing that I could be waiting months for a new Desire, decided to just go for it and get a Galaxy S. Had it about a week now and have to say it is a very impressive handset.

I thought the Desire's 3.7" AMOLED screen was impressive, but this one's 4" S-AMOLED is something else! It is insanely good, and quite a significant improvement. You can also see it outside, which is a massive step forward. I do miss HTC Sense a little, as it's sort of all there which makes life a bit easier. They've tried with the TouchWiz interface but I don't like it much, mainly because they've tried to emulate the iPhone which simply isn't intuitive. Thankfully there are so many apps out there now that I've swapped to LauncherPro which is much nicer and surprisingly a lot faster (wish I'd tried it on the HTC to see whether it improved anything)

It's also noticeably faster than the Desire, the Hummingbird processor clearly showing it's power over the Snapdragon. Oddly there seems to be a common complaint (also on mine) that every so often it hangs for a bit - mildly annoying but hopefully fixed on the next firmware update. If not some guys on modaco have already fixed it so if it gets too annoying I'll just root it and stick that on.

Weirdly enough my only complaint is with its appearance - it looks a LOT like an iPhone 3GS - so much so that some mates actually thought it was one. It's all proper quality, and stupidly light, the desire feels like a brick next to this. I just don't get why they tried to make it look like an iPhone.

But that aside it's a brilliant bit of kit, and well worth a look if you're thinking of getting a Desire or N1 Smile

I never bother that much with the camera, it does take decent photos even in low light though so perfect for a snap when you don't have your camera with you.

Asi cnat beat iphone 4

Lol I think it's already beat, but since when has that affected Apple sales :tongue_smilie:

Have you seen the browser speeds of the Nexus One now with the 2.2 update? It's so much faster than the iPhone, it's browsing at iPad speeds now.......

Im torn between an ihpone 4 and something else,

i was upgrading this week, but funds wont allow Sad so will wait until next april

the only thing keeping me with iphone at the minute is its easy user interface,

unlock/swipe across/press app/ its open

unlock/press app store/ seach for app/hit buy/enter itunes password/downloads

i know the camera isnt the greatest, nor is the battery life, but for userbility it jsut cannot be rivalved

If there was a phone out there that had such easy to use facilities and didnt rely on using a laptop software (i havent plugged my phone into itunes for nearly a year as i do it via the phone over wifi) then i would seriously consider moving over

but until that day comes im sticking with the iphone as an alround package it ticks far more boxes

although i reckon by next April Android will be on a par app wise with apple and should be some decent phones about

Have you tried an android phone? You have just described the exact method of doing things on android as well.........

Again I barely plug my phone to my PC as well, only to transfer music really once every so often, otherwise it doesn't need to be connected.

If you lived more locally I'd show you exactly what you're missing. Android offers way more than the iPhone does, and have a go at typing with swype and you might not even be interested in the rest

The wifi signal isn't weak, neither is the GPS - I think these issues were on early pre-launch handsets but mine is fine on these and seems to have been sorted. The contacts list is pants though and I'm hoping a fix turns up soon as it is annoying me having every single google contact in the phone book. Silly as android has an option to just show "my contacts" so I don't get why Samsung would have removed it.

You definitely have to try one though, you'll see that android and iPhone OS aren't actually that different, except that Android just gives you loads more options to do things how you want.

I realise that Apple's success is due to the fact that there are a lot of people who prefer not to have those options, but it's well worth a look in to see which group you fall into Smile

ah that sounds cool i mean i use my phone for mostly

Facebook - how is the FB app on android? iphone one is easy to use but you cant edit your own profile via it

Internet browsing - iphone is okay at this, as good as you can expect froma handheld

Music - is it easy to upload tunes, can you donwload via wifi??

Apps - other apps like F1, news, hotmail, sky sports etc, can you get htese on android?

Games - are these similar to iphone? ive got worms that im playing alot at the minute, cricket, snooker, golf etc

theres so much about the iphone i love, if an android can cover off what i already love about it, and then improve on stuff i dont like (camera, video, size)

then we are good to convert Big Grin

Facebook app I think is quite similar, pretty basic in nature, can't do any real editing, just messages, wall, photos, etc. Don't use FB much but tend to use the main site when I need to via the browser.

The browser's fine, but I thought the iPhone was pretty good as well. They're roughly the same, although android 2.2 (only on the nexus one at the mo) is a bit quicker than the iPhone due to some restructured software.

Music's easy, if you like iTunes, then Doubletwist is probably what you want to use. It calls itself the iTunes for other devices, and it is very similar, even in appearance. But you can sync with anything really, I use MediaMonkey or Windows Media Player. Plus you aren't restricted by video type, you can pretty much drag any video file on and it'll play. I don't have it, but I'm pretty sure you can do wifi sync with the right app. No idea how much it costs either.

There's no official F1 app yet, but there is for tons of other phones so it's only a matter of time. They just launched a WRC app so it has to be coming soon, plus there are other non-official F1 apps to keep you going until the official one turns up.

Yep all the news apps are there, BBC, CNN, etc. Hotmail is the only thing that's a bit of a pain I think on android, but I'd recommend switching to Gmail if you can if you went android as the sync makes life a lot easier - just set up your hotmail to forward to the new gmail account to make the transition easy.

Yep I think there's a lot of overlap with games (at the end of the day they want to make money so being on both platforms makes sense). I've just got a racing game called asphalt which has insanely good graphics for a phone.........

Not sure if they're all on here, but there's a good selection of the available apps on here, take a look and see what's available

http://www.androidzoom.com/

Tell me what you love about the iPhone and I'll tell you whether you can do it on android or not Smile
