So in august 2008 I accepted a new job and I didnt fancy one of their company cars so instead opted for the car allowance. I had at the time a 1995 Toyota Starlet GT Turbo which was my weekend project car but I thought at the time this wouldnt be practicle travelling 60 mile round trip daily so decided the old gal had to go. I started looking around at what performance cars was out there and really wanted to stay Jap! So being in love with Subaru I went to Sparshatts in Botley to view the new WRX. Fell in love however the dealer messed me about so much I decided to walk away.

On the way home feeling deflated I noticed a EP3 and thought hmm could be a gooer. Me and the old man went to Alan Day's and I test drove a FN CTR. This had to be it, it was luxurious and spacious inside, was fully loaded and when you hit I-Vtec the smile on my face said it all. I managed thanks to my dad get an awesome deal and they could guarntee a delivery with 3 weeks so I had a car ready for my new job. I went for the GT spec model as you get bit more mod cons and also had chucked in the CTR mats and Decal pack (whcih I would never pay for at £130!!)

The next few days i spent tidying up the GT ready for sale Sad first viewer came down from wigan and brought there and then! I got £1900 cash which was very low however I needed £1500 to cover insurance costs and monies owed to garage for engine mod works.

Two weeks passed and I got a call from the dealer to say it was in!

So bye bye GT

And Hello CTR!

Got her home and took these pics!

The dealer hadnt managed to get my private plate transfered in time so had to temporay insure it with the HV58 plates. Anyway to cut a very long story short they managed to mess up 3 different plates with my new reg on for not being able to drill two holes in the right place. Then after 2 weeks my side decal started to unpeel and went down there very cross. They blames my cleaning products but swiftly informed them that clearly they were applied on a dirty car! So that got done under warranty. It also went in that day for the geometry on the rear to be set up properly as it was wobbly and flicked the back end out the motorway due to it being unstable.

So not a good start!!

After a few weeks I started to worry that I made the wrong move going NA. I had test drove the CTR in the wet and really didnt much much power down. The GT was very quick and was dyno'd at 194 bhp so going from torque and power to no torque, heavy and some power was strange. I got used to this and what made me change my mind was the handling. It was so responsive in the corners and gripped like it was 4WD. Ok so i didnt have boost but I had the handling in the corners. I then decided the audio wasnt quite right and so a month in I had this set up.

I had fitted an Alpine 7" dash DVD player fitted with ipod lead hidden in storage uint, Fusion 12" Subwoofer and Fusion mono amp for the surround sound effect! Was a royal pain to fit as once the HU removed you lose the AC dsiplay. Thanks to Sextons we managed to sort this issue by connecting the OEM HU in the boot and splicing and running 2 massive cables from the boot to the display in the dash.

My next job was noise as i had started to miss the growl. I got offered an AEM induction kit and was very cheap so brought it and spent an afternoon fitting it with a mate. It was rubbish. Due to where it sits next to the engine bay which gets very hot it suffered heat soak (even with a heat shield i got given!). Basically it would stutter to pull away and really felt a power lose. So that had to go an air box back on.

Next was service as I was doing many miles and god did that cripple my bank account think it was £350 from memory from main dealer. Then straight away front tyres went after less than 12k (and i didnt drive it that hard in the period). £125 for one BFG grrrr!!!

So my modding gene hit me again and decided to look into chaning the bulbs and go for better induction kit. Read few reviews on the Pipercross which came with its own heat shield which supposidly did the trick.

6500k Xenon dipped and fog light bulbs fitted!

http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd195...030748.jpg
Pipercross fitted

Also brought Skunk 2 and Jack resovoir covers

Then the fog smashed which after some research was a common fault due to weak glass. Went to main dealer who wanted £98 for the unit. So ebay I trawled through and managed to get a new one for £60! Had it fitted and also brought some Lamin-X blue fog light covers to prevent another £60 pay out down the line!

Still wasnt happy with performance so brought a JPerformance decat off ebay. Got told the O2 sensor supplied would prevent the EML from engauging but they were wrong. Item was not like it was described. There was no difference in performance, exhaust note and EML came on instantly. It also made the car run dangerously lean so within 2 weeks was taken off and sold on ebay.

next few months looked at exhaust reviews and I didnt want to be a sheep and buy a miltek which everyone buys. Found a Scorpion decat system so brought this used and travelled to Suffolk to pick up. Well decat wasnt Scorpion but was another JP one :Shooting::cursing: told him clearly says JP on it but took it with the scorpion cat back anyway. So another JP decat went on ebay and sold instantly.

Got booked into TGM to have the cat back fitted. It was great however fitment wasnt quite right even to Toms best efforts and got a slight knock on tick over when warm. But for £200 after sale of decat was an excellent buy. Car seemed to improve performance and odly MPG and combined with the induction kit in vtec made one hell of a noise :tongue_smilie:

Then it went down hill. Car broke down 4 times within two weeks Sad The battery kept dying. Went to Yeomans Honda near work who told me that the MCU is the issue however await a recall letter. Week later car got recalled and MCU replaced. However problem occured again! was so angry and went back to Yeomans who told me i had to wait a fortnight and expected me to call AA daily untill it was booked in. After an angry call to Honda UK my car went to Alan Day in Portsmouth and problem fixed!

I had started to develop chronic back ache and had physio on my back. I got told was down to the ride by the doctors. In the mean time though I was still very dissapointed with the car and after a heart to heart with the misses decided to sell and buy something more mature. So car went up for sale and IS200 was brought.

The car is still for sale 3 months on and i know alot of people in this postion cant sell the damned thing. I was young and foolish to buy the CTR, it didnt live upto its baby brothers hype (EP3), felt cheaply made, under powered for size and weight. Also moddyfing it was out of question unless your a millionaire as Mugen, Toda parts are over priced!!! (1k for cat back Toda jog on!) To this day on I wish I had kept the Starbo she never let me down Sad but you live once. If you have 18k to spend on a car dont buy a CTR, buy a WRX it wont let you down!!!

It is such a shame that a beautiful car like the Civic was designed and build on a budget. This is the reason I didn't get one, all the owners clubs are full of stories about how dreadful the have become. Apparently a clutch on the diesel is expected to fail at 35000 miles - and honda think thats OK?????

Such a shame.

It says it all that Honda have ceased making the CTR's.

Build quality of the Fn2 is shoddy and penny pinching with the torsion beam suspension.

Did you buy the car from KFC? :tongue_smilie:

Seriously though, that's a lovely looking car, I didn't know they had so many problems, really is a shame when the last gen model was so good.

As other have said the Honda has been a good car for many years now.

In fact they were the bench mark for most cars, how far can you fall if you forget to give the customer what they want.

I think the FN2 was just out of character.
EK9 = best CTR ever built FACT
EP3 = well defined car, K20 engine excellent enginering bench mark, handling excellent

These cars didnt seem to have any expense spared. The FN2 seemed to lack something.................. heart!!! It was just a normal civic with the K20A lump put in with some recaro's. The Jap TYPE R gets raving reviews so why doesnt the Euro live up to this???
