Janspeed Supercharged IS200
Janspeed Supercharged IS200
Good afternoon all. It's my first post here so go easy on me!
I've recently purchased a supercharged IS200 that was once owned by the MD of Janspeed. For all and tense purposes it looks like a normal TTE s/c fitted SE model but I know there is more to this car than meets the eye.
Where the TTE logo is usually written on the intercooler pipes it says Janspeed and from what I've read it has a modified pre-cats and a hi-flow sports cat, there is a full janspeed exhaust system fitted as well but it's in a pretty poor state. It also has a HKS SSQV Blow off valve and a close-ratio short shifter. Not bad for a car I got for £1500:thumbup1:
I picked the car up really cheaply and my plans are to take the supercharger and other goodies off it for my own IS200 that I've had for the last six years, I've no interest in this car itself as it's been neglected quite badly and it's covered in dents and scrapes and needs a bit of work to get it back in shape but that's money spent that I'd never get back.
Before I get this thing up on the jackstands and start stripping it does anyone know the history of this car or what development work was done by Janspeed and any parts I should be looking out for?
From what i remember from past reading mate, is that the janspeed version were test cars for when lexus were trialing the kits, but it went a bit dead after that?? there supposed to run 0.6bar boost compared to the tte kit which runs 0.3 bar boost? due to heat build up from the charger, hence why the tte kit was only 0.3bar when it went live? not sure what they did to do it though to do that, or how true it is?
Will try and find the info out again as it is on the net somewhere?
Thanks for that Bandit, I'm wondering if the s/c was working at 0.6BAR would they have remapped the ECU or added bigger injectors?
Looking at the injectors or the ECU is there any way of telling if they've been changed or modified? It's just I don't want to fit the supercharger kit and end up blowing my engine because I've missed some parts that were part of the Janspeed development job.
I take it the TTE black box is found in with the ECU in the box in the engine bay, is there anything likely to be hiding anywhere else that would be related to the tuning of this car, say in under the dashboard or anywhere else.
I'll get some photos of this project up when I take into it in saturday
So far my plan is to take the Supercharger kit and BOV, the short shifter, the manifold and cats, and the ECU (just in case it somehow was remapped).
Here's another and final question, On driving this car home I noticed that there was no kick at 4500rpm. That's where the VVTI kicks in on my n/a IS200. Is that normal on a s/c engine for it to rev smoothly with no kick or is something not right there?
welcome Lance!
if they were running 06bar (does it have a boost gauge fitted?) they would have added some form of ecu i would have thought. youll be able to tell if you look in the ecu box as theyll be extra wires soldered in. the box may be hidden in there as well or maybe behind the glove box?
the ecu itself cannot be remapped so dont worry about that.
also the VVTi isnt a mssive kick so the supercharger may just be covering it.
Sorry to be pedantic but its not VVTI that you feel at 4500 ish its the inlet manifold changing length*............VVTI operates over the whole rev range to improve fuel economy mostly and torque.
As you have said it is best to be very careful moving the components from the Janspeed to your car especially if it was running 0.6 bar boost. If it was it will be running a 160mm pulley most likely as opposed to the 130mm pulley on TTE ones along with all the associated electoronics and injectors to map it for the boost.
*inlet manifold has a longer path below 4250rpm and switches to a shorter path after that. Uses ACIS
I got the supercharger swapped over into my own car, all running well thankfully!
During the swap I took a good look around the Janspeed car to see if there was a piggyback ECU and there wasn't anything except the HKS FCD in the box in the engine bay. There was nothing behind the glove box or signs of any additional modifications and the pulley looks to be standard size one. The injectors looked exactly the same as the ones on my own car.
From what I could see all Janspeed done was fit a HKS BOV, sports cat and a mild steel exhaust system. The precats were totally standard too, I looked to see if they had any welds but nothing was seen.
Even the Janspeed logo that was on the intercooler pipe was just a sticker covering up the engraved TTE logo.
I have some photos of the system in the janspeed car. I'll get some of it in my own car soon, as you can see it is in dire need of a good clean up! It was in a bit of a sorry state when I bought it but it has now gone to a much better home!
This is the Janspeed car. 2001 IS200 SE
Engine bay in a poor state.
Standard pulley?
Janspeed mild steel exhaust system.
Logo on intercooler pipe...
covering TTE engraving.
Clutch reservoir relocated.
HKS Blow off Valve.
Despite a monster called Matt telling me that it came with a Vacuum bypass, it didnt.
Inside the airbox...
and the filter is stuffed. How this thing got air is beyond me!
The pulley were interested in is the one on the engine mate. The charger one stays the same.
Seems they've also fitted a custom brake fluid cylinder as well.
