Whilst driving around in my IS200 I heard, what can only be described as a loud bang from the underside of the near side. I stopped shortly afterwards to take a look but couldn't see anything wrong. I wound the nearside window down and drove along at slow speed, where I heard a constant metallic continual clicking noise which got faster if I increased my speed and vice versa if i travelled more slowly.
I have now jacked up the car and spun the rear wheel, where I could hear the noise again (on every revolution of the wheel)
It seems to be coming from inside the rear disc where the handbrake adjustment is. Before I have a more in depth look, has anyone had a similar problem, or have any idea what it could be? Huh

Im guessing wheel bearing? But that is a complete guess, someone might be able to shed more light on the subject? Is the wheel hard to turn?

Sparky, First impressions show the H/Brake to be working

Demon, No play in the wheel bearing (movement top to bottom or side to side)

I have today removed the disc from the rear wheel and examined the handbrake mechanism. Both shoes were in place as were the springs on both sides. To my horror I saw a 'bent' metal bar wedged close to the adjuster. This bar is about 10mm wide and is shaped (side on) like a letter E.
The outer edges appeared rough (as if spot welded to the back plate). Upon close inspection I saw two markes on the back plate just underneath the handbrake cable.

As such i examined the other side and found that the metal bar had also come adrift and was wedged to one side of the brake shoe.

I went along to Lexus in Norwich and spoke with one of their mechanics who identified it as the holder for the handbrake cable. He advised me that I had a number of options, run without them, spot weld them back into place, or purchase a new back plate which would also necessitate the removal of the hub!!!

Has any one else experienced this?

That sounds very odd ! I wonder if a previous owner/mechanic had done something to the car that helped cause this to happen ? :confused1:

If I were to replace the back plate it would cost the earth. In any case the back plate is not damaged or rusty.

Stevie' as you point out it does appear a mystery. I did wonder whether my mechanic whom I use, had overtightened the handbrake adjustment, but even so would doubt that it would cause the plates to fall off/break off.

Just as a matter of interest does anyone know where I can locate one of those user manual exploded views of the rear handbrake mechanism (with disc removed)?
