My gearbox sounds 'loose', any ideas?
My gearbox sounds 'loose', any ideas?
I have to be careful with 1st to 2nd changes now, otherwise it 'clonks' into 2nd, feels like the syncro-mesh can't match the speed fast enough.
But that's something that happens on a lot of cars as those gears are used a lot, however the bit that's worrying me is that there appears to be a lot of play in the gearbox/clutch.
If the car it stationary and I let the clutch out in any gear, theres a clunk sound from under the car which sounds like it is in/near the gearbox. Sounds like a UJ has become slack and is taking up the play when the clutch engages?
And again, if I'm driving along in 1st gear and take my foot of the accelerator, the car jolts forwards as the play is taken up in the opposite direction, and it makes it quite hard to drive at low speeds without turning the car into a bucking bronco.
Any ideas?
When was the last time you changed the gearbox oil? That might make shifting easier if you're on old oil.
As for the clonk I'd be checking the engine mounts but specifically the rear one on the gearbox.
Dan has an oil leak on his supra which has more or less completely destroyed the rear gearbox mount as it's eaten the rubber away and it's got shed loads of play in it.
Gearbox oil was changed last year, along with pretty much every other fluid in the car.
Do I need to take of splash guards/covers to see the mounts or can I just jack it up and have a look? I'll see if I can stick it on the ramps next door and check them when the guy gets back.
If it is that, will it do any damage being lose? Or will it be fine once they are replaced?
I've no idea, I don't remember what the underside of an IS200 looks like...
If it is that, it will do some damage if you leave it like that for a long time. Eventually you'll start wearing out bearings on the output shaft of the gearbox and the middle of the prop, and allowing the engine + box to move around more than intended will put extra stress on your front engine mounts.
hmmm could be, might be an excuse to get a lightened flywheel if it is.
I'll get it checked on Monday.
