Import number plate Font size??
Import number plate Font size??
Does anybody know what the legal font size is for an imported vehicle number plate? I was always told it was 64mm?? And the plate i had made up was supposedly a legal import plate with legal font sizing?
The reason i ask is because I had a policeman tonight measure my number plate font and he says the fonts are too small? and also said that he THINKS? it should have 72mm fonts?
My front number plate fits in the original aperture for an import vehicle, so the plate itself is OK? but from what i've found on the net is that he has quoted me the size for a UK registered vehicle and not an import :confused1:
The funny thing is though, is that while he was talking to me i fitted my old plate back on the car? which he said was fine even though it has the same size font that's already on the car and the same size font as on the rear plate of my car both 64mm fonts? :confused1::confused1:
And if it is 64mm for an import plate is there anything I can get in writing to prove it, so if i get pulled or asked about it in the future i have proof that it is legal?? :confused1:
Thanks for any help guys :thumbup1:
Does this help?

The DVLA document is here.
Don't think imports can use a smaller font, it needs to be 79mm in height. Sounds like you are using the motorbike sized font at the moment ?
Edit - ok, Stav's link explains this
Bit of an odd one? mines the same as the Skyline example on craigsplates? which by the look of it seems OK? Maybe worth me sending the DVLA an email/letter to see if they can clarify it for me?
When i had it made I asked for a legal plate for an import and was given the information that it adhered to UK regulations for an import vehicle of my type and model, due to the aperture size for the fitting of the plate?
Thanks guys :thumbup1:
It sounds like the thing you need to be able to justify is the functional reason why you need a smaller plate - i.e. a bigger one won't fit. Then with a smaller plate you can use the smaller font.
Yes mate, the bumper cut out is for the size of plate i have fitted, i did get the feeling he didn't actually know what he was talking about, as he even gave me the wrong details for the size of the UK font? And by the look on his face when i quoted the import sizes showed he hadn't got a clue? But will leave the old plate on for now even though it looks terrible, and if i can get the details from the DVLA saying mine is ok/not ok, then at least i'll know what i can/can't do
I've found that as long as my car has a smaller than UK plate recess, its OK to have the smaller style fitted with the 64mm fonts, as the gap made for the plate will only take a 12"x4" plate or the square version which also has the 64mm font and not the 79mm font? the recess is too small for a UK sized number plate..
Its just a bit odd that my old plate has 64mm fonts and the rear plate also has 64mm fonts and was said to be ok?, yet he said my new plate was incorrect even though the fonts are the same size as the old one
I've now sent the DVLA an email with pictures of the plate and car to see what they say, If they say its ok to have the new plate fitted and its legal then i'll carry a printout of the reply with me incase i get pulled over for it, and at least that way I have some proof that the DVLA approve and have said its OK? But if it isn't legal then i'll just have a new one made the same as the old one :thumbup1:
i'll help you out mate heres a pic of my old car with a legal front number plate and a legal rear number plate(please dont argue about the legality of these plates i went to court with the import plate info and won and never had any greef for over two years after)
whats written on the bottom of the plate????
tax'd tested, insured go bother someone else.heehee got cocky after winning my case!
hope that helps matey!what year is the liner??that also can make the difference on what size of plate you can have(sva tested or not)
