I'm looking for some copper plugs with three ground prongs and a .040 gap. Probably with stock heat rating or one step cooler.

Reason I'm asking is that I (well Phil01) put some NGK BKR7EIX's on my car in preparation for boost. However, less than 300 miles later they seem to be toast. Thick carbon deposits all over them and rough idle.

My thinking is that now I'm running meth, I don't necessarily need to compensate the heat rating of the sparks too much. And the reason for so much carbon build-up could be that the sparks aren't running hot enough to burn it off?

Here's a pic:

The answer in case anyone was wondering is : yes, yes they work.

Although not much use to those of us runnign N/A, boosted folks who are tuning their cars might be interested in them as not only are they copper, but they have 3 prongs which ensures that they will last a lot longer

Hey Folks, just bumping this thread as I need new plugs.
The past week the car has been starting the slightly miss fire whilst cruising, VERY slightly! And now has a pretty lumpy idle too. I am running the same plugs as Jim listed above, Iridium bkr7eix, they are waaaaay more sooted up than Jims photo.

What should I get? The same plugs again? Jim, you said they were ruined after very little millage, is that due to the setup of your car?

I see lots of the same plugs on eBay that I already have, but none listed forlexus? I assume any will do?

Yeah I think mine got knackered mostly because of the overly rich tune I was running at the time. What you can do though is spray them with some brake cleaner + wire brush and clean them up, and they should work like new.

However, I opted for slightly hotter plugs (6 heat rating) and also 3 prong copper ones. The advantage of this was that you get the best spark (copper), plus 3x the life of a traditional copper plug, plus if you misfire you melt the plug rather than sending bits of iridium into the cylinders

copper plugs fire the best with a big fat spark.
the only advantage iridium or platinum plug over copper is their long service life, they do not fire any better, infact they do not fire as well as copper electrodes

Is it not possible to get silver spark plugs? I'd have thought that would be a better choice as it's the most conductive metal known to man...

Must be some reason for not using it (other than expense, as spark plugs wouldn't need a lot of it)

But yes Iridium is just used to extend life as its incredibly hard wearing, so much so that the iridium tips on spark plugs have to be welded with lasers...

Thanks Jim et all for the responses.

I will have a go at cleaning them up tonight just to see what happens, can't hurt to try really. I know that mine is running very rich also, so might be in the same boat as yourself. I'll report back Smile

I was running BKR6ET-10 plugs on mine with the stock gapping. From what I remember the gap was optimal (for a F/I IS300 at least).

You probably won't find those plugs anywhere online, but ask a local car parts place that has dealings with NGK and they'll be able to get you some super quick.
