KP - "The Caracal" My Second Project
Hi all,
On my Owners Club Forum someone is selling on their AE92 GTi-16 for a rather affordable price - she needs some welding, a respray and a few other bits replacing which is perfect because that's the perfect base for my latest Project idea - 1UZ-FE V8 VVTi, 4.0 Litres and 300BHP all in the front of an AE92 GTi!
I'm going to see her weekend after next, if all checks out well then I'll get her back home to store her whilst I elaborate on the plans. But for now:
I have found a company that will make up a Custom Prop-Shaft for me for roughly £300 fully balanced and tested. So that's one question mark down.
I have also decided what to do with her in the way of cutting the centre out.
Basically I need to crimp and remove the fuel lines (but not the tank) and remove the whole interior like I did with my current GTi. I then cut a 12inch wide hole along the length of the car from where the diff will be, to the firewall. The firewall will have a hole as wide as the 1UZ-FE cut out of it so I can shift the engine to the centre a little more - this is going to help with the Gearstick position and the weight distribution. This car is going sideways at some point
The steering rack will also come out to make way for a Ford Sierra unit.
Next up will be to buy the engine and gearbox assembly, a 3S-GTE Flywheel and Clutch and a Modified Bell-Housing + Adapter Plate. I can buy the CAD Package from Ebay!
When I have the engine and 'box positioned I mark up the positions and mounts etc - welding in two new chassis rails underneath the current ones at the front to keep her from twisting.
They get bolted in and I then make the metal frame and skin to form the Transmission Tunnel.
The Diff is an on-going debate but I expect I'll be grabbing something from a Celica ST202 GT4 along with its hubs. They have the same PCD and offsets etc which will make it a little easier.
I have a feeling I'm going to start cutting away fairly soon after I take delivery of the car.... but it's all in the Logistics
*Once everything works and assuming I haven't ploughed it into a tree, I'll refit the interior to look as standard as I can.
This is going to be the theme for the whole car. She is going to be a sleeper for now. The paint will be the same as my current GTi - standard but brilliantly finished. The wheels will be standard and so will the body-kit. The only thing you may see is a scoop if I need one, but that's only if I can't find a good place to put the rad.
Some time down the line I'll introduce two Turbos into the mix, however phase one is going to cost me roughly £6500 maybe £6000 if I buy wisely...
I can't wait!! College and building this is going to be heaven
If the car is as described then I'm going for it! It'll take a few years for me to get this finished but my god it's going to be fun!
Just made the first purchase towards the "Caracal"... 20 steel cutting discs. Gotta start somewhere!
What do you think?

I love your enthusiasm and plans...
Keep the information coming...
Thanks Dave I will keep updating this Thread with any information I get, it may seem dull for a while but I am hoping that someone will find it useful if they decide to do the same!
I'm just spending all my time researching for it at the moment, I will soon get onto stripping it down over the weekends to come, and I can at least cut it open over the christmas period.
The main issue I have is that even if it can't run it needs to be mobile - which slows progress until I get the engine and box assembly but hopefully I can just get on with it!
I'll have pictures as soon as I get the car.

If my memory serves me well, that car had a smack on its OSR alloy, warping it a bit...... Sure its the same one - number plate looks so familiar.
How do I know?? I used to own it and gave it the smack, spun it on an roundabout near Stacy Bushes:laugh: Many years ago
90% sure its the same one. I used to swap cars quite a lot back then, never having one for more then 6 months at a time.
Thank you for letting me know! Well seeing as she is getting Coilovers, front ARB, front and rear braces and I have spare wheels I should be able to sort it!
How did you spin it out of interest? They are lively cars that much I know

Ice mate and a little bit to much speed....
They are good solid little things, probably a good car to learn in, although insurance I bet is interesting being a GTi.
haha excellent. Yeh they're excellent motors and I am trying to save them - hence starting the AE92OC
Insurance... I have been quoted from £2000-£79000

 Excellent!
Yeh it's pricey as hell, pretty deadly but I am just going balls out with this, if I can't insure it I may as well make it so I can't ensure it with good reason.

Having done a little more research and spent many hours pulling out hair about what Steering Rack to use - I'm going with an Electric rack from any E12 Corolla. Thanks to a mate of mine for telling me about them!
It doesn't need any PAS lines and it is really compact anyway - yet it is electric and still works like a PAS rack.
They cost anything between £50 and £100 which is very reasonable.
That's almost it for the parts I need to really think about
