Basically, kicks in after a few minutes of driving though it's sometimes present from the get go.

It sounds like a low pitched rattling/clunking noise that changes frequency based on my speed. It seems to be much louder under load and particularly noticeable under engine braking. Still present when the clutch is depressed and goes away when I stop moving. At a guess, I'd say it's coming from the diff.

Only started about 2 weeks ago, can't feel anything through the steering wheel though so I'm a bit stumped. Anyone got any ideas, or had a similar issue?

It doesn't seem to have affected the car, other than being very loud and annoying.

EDIT: I've got the torsen LSD if that makes any difference.

If it were the diff you wouldnt feel anything through the steering. If you can, get the back up in the air and check the diff case to make sure its not got an oil leak and its running low on fluid. It is possible that its also caused by one of the universal joints on the drive shafts. If you can, jack one wheel up at a time and give them a spin, see if theres any strange noises coming from the driveshafts.

Again, another possibility could be the main propshaft universal joints, so if no luck with the diff or driveshafts, check this as well.

If there are any vibrations caused you would feel them through the chassis.

Good advice there. Certainly worth checking out the diff, half shafts and that whole area with each, and both, wheels off the ground. Did your car have an LSD from the factory? Or has it been retrofitted? I've become somewhat of an expert on this sort of thing recently, with my Land Rover going through 3 diffs, 4 half shafts and 2 props in a year!

Diff is a factory fit. I'll jack it up asap and have a look. I can feel a slight vibration in the footwell of the front passenger seat, which is slightly concerning. Not sure if this makes any difference, but it seems to have started making the noise at the same time I tested out snow mode. Probably coincidence but I thought I'd better mention everything.

Thanks for the advice so far.

Ah, I see now you have a Sport. I just remember reading "Poverty Spec" and assuming it was a lower model!

not had a chance to jack it up yet, but the noise gets considerably worse when I turn right. Almost goes away if I turn left. It's present in a straight line but even a slight turn to the right will make it at least twice as loud.

If it's affected by the wheels turning i would assume its a front end issue and not the diff.

I've got the rear handbrake drum making a noise on the drivers side anyway, which only happens when I turn right. I am now thinking the two may be related. Going to whip the back brake off and take a look. Ormi said something about hitting it with a hammer a while back, but I'm not entirely sure where I'm supposed to hit.

If that is what I think it is, then I have it too! Once you get the brake off, I think it will be clear what is catching and needs hammering!
